2001 GTI wont accelerate

I bought a 2001 GTI yesterday , dropped in lake, and it will idle but wont accelerate, coughs and spits, I held the choke open and found the sweet spot and could get it to go. What should I start replacing first?
The engine seems to run fine, my kids want to go for a ride soon, maybe a trip to the dealer ? anybody with suggestions can email me direct dc7730@yahoo.com , thanks

How did it run before you bought it. Is the gas old ? Was it winterized last season and this was this it's first run of the season? Be sure it has fresh fuel and new plugs for a start it might be ok after that.
