Hey Guys. Im new to the forum. I just bought this 2001 Sea-doo Challenger 2000 with a brand new Mercury M2 v6 EFI motor. The boat has 10 hours on the motor and it sat for a year or so. I have changed out the oil and plugs and gas and checked the fuel filters. The boat will not start. It cranks..but doesnt start. The stop botton is missing on the boat. Im not sure if this boat has a DESS system..Pretty sure it does not so it doesnt need a lanyard. However, Does it need a stop botton with a clip lanyard?

I was told by the seller that his buddy was messing around and disconnected some stuff,,,I have found the steering throttle cable is taken off..Will this effect starting the boat?

I also found a clip with two black wires spliced together in the electrical compartment in front of the drivers seat?
Not sure what this is! any help would be awesome! Thx Dan

Welcome.

No... the Merc boats do not have the DESS. BUT... they do have a "Kill" lanyard. It's a simple ground to the ignition. SO... if that post is pushed back into the helm... that could be the problem.

FYI... it will crank without it. But it will never start.

So... look behind the helm at the wiring. If there's no sign of the post... then make sure the ground wire going back to the engine gets disconnected. As I recall... off the top of my head... it will be a black wire with a blue trace. BUT... the key also uses that to shut it down.

Last thing... what engine is in it? Post a couple pics if you are unsure. (Seadoo used 5 different merc's)

It def has no stop post in the helm. Here are some pictures. I bought a quicksilver kill switch and not real sure if I need it to just get this boat started. There is two black wires spliced together. Not sure if that anything to do with this issue. Please help. Thank you.

Not sure if that's your kill switch or not. But, grounding the kill line will shut off the engine. So... if that's your kill wires... open them.

That means absolutely nothing to me. As above, Seadoo used 5 different Merc engines, and you could get boats with different power levels. SO... post a couple pics of the engine, otherwise... I can't help.

I figured out there is a float in this motor and cleaned it out. It fired up and ran great. The other night the boat just didnt start...It wouldnt even try to start. The pulse pump kicked on but the started would not fire. I got towed in and figured it was a bad solenoid because I was able to jump it to get it started at the ramp. I went and bought a new solenoid and put it on. I really didnt know which post was what but copied the old way it was wired. Now the boat wont start at all. I tried jumping that solenoid and it fired up. I ran it for a few min before it shut down completely. It will crank but not fire up. It seems like Im getting no spark ...any idea would be greatly appreciated. And thank you Dr. Honda for your last response.

I guess the float you are talking about, is the valve that allows fuel into the vapor tank. (right?) If so... is it stuck again?

No its getting fuel...no spark....I can hear the pumps when I turn the key..I can jump the solenoid but it doesn't fire. The wiring on this motor is funky. There is no lanyard. The key works as the start and stop. Im starting to think this issue has to do with the TPS because I noticed it was very touchy around the neutral area to get it to start. I also noticed a tan wire hanging by the alarm in front of the bottom of the motor and the alarm is disconnected. Any thoughts on this. Thank you so much

The TPS doesn't keep it from getting spark.

I would check the black/yellow wire at the engine, to see if there is a ground on it. If there isn't... then there is a stator, or trigger issue.

The issue is resolved...Since there is not a very good electrical diagram to follow and no one seems to have any idea regarding the Fuse Box I went thru every wire until I found that the starter solenoid had a break in the ground wire. If anyone has an issue with their boat just shuting down for no apparent reason and not able to start it..Replace the solenoid and replace the ground wire...the wire used was too small for it and fried inside the plastic. I replaced it with a primary black wire and grounded it. It fixed all my issues. Thank god.
