2000 Yamaha GP 1200 R starter problem,

Ok I have put in new battery checked and charged. Used starter and new solenoid. Problem is starte will no stay engaged long enough to start. Starter turns over engine fine with plugs out. Install plugs and it will not turn over. Add fuel/oil to cylinders through plug hole and it will fire up and run good. I have cleaned all contact points for positive and ground. Where to next?

Sounds like you need a new reduction gear (also known as a bendix). Pull the flywheel cover and flywheel to replace it.
