after running this ski I just got for the first time I came home to flush it out and it realy didnt want to start it made a repeated binding or clicking type sound. The sound seems to realy becoming from the box to the side of motor that has the plug wires comin out of it... The (new) battery was also throw in a little bit of sparks off the negative post (if that is relative)... I took the key on and off a few times then put battery charger on and kept tryin to start tell it turned over and started!! Anybody thats mabye heard this please help!!

Charging?......

There are many threads in here about the charging systems of these skis. By using the battery charger, you can damage the MPEM which can cost hundreds of dollars to replace.

If your able to start from the battery charger but not the battery, either the battery is dead or the rectifier/regulator is bad. On this type ski, that component part is in the MPEM, so it would have to be replaced. This usually happens from jump starting.

On all the smaller model engines, the rectifier/regulator is outside of the mpem and can be replaced for under $100 bucks...........

If the ski ran fine on the river, brought it home and wouldn't start, this sounds like you had a good battery, started it and instead of running off the magneto, you were running your electronics on the battery. That's why it got drained...........

First of all Snipe let me just say a few days back I spent like a whole day reading a bunch of Q&As man you realy put some time into helping ppl on here thanks alot you answer like everything!! anyways I read your last line there a few times and not followin all the way... When I had it out we ran it just about 20 mins or so to test it out a bit ..it started up and ran (as we shut it dn and cranked it up several times it was fine) then after getting home (five min drive) is when it became a problem and even with the charger on it was still hard to get it to fire.. Now I also am thinking there is a drain somewhere because it sat over night and battery was dead again

Spark?....

The spark you get when attaching your ground wire is normal. This is your mpem powering up. It will shut off after several seconds.

Did you test your charging system? The next time you get the ski running, take a multi meter and see how many volts DC current you are getting. It still sounds like you might have a charging problem.

Like you said, if you took it out and it started and stopped several times, then, you get home and it's dead.........this is indicative of a charging system problem. About 80% of the batteries amps are used on turning over the high torque starter. Once running, the small amount of power in the battery can supply fire to the ignition for an hour or more before it finally drains the battery dry.

You had a problem starting on the battery charger until the charger built up enough amps to turn it over, I"d presume............

But, if you've read all the threads.......then, you've read enough of my posts to know what I"m talking about..............Yeah, I'm married with kids and this is my escape. Outside the fact I hate seeing people get ripped off at a repair shop, hearing that the motor needs to be rebuilt when all you need is a fuel filter....................thanks for the plug!...........

The more I think bout it I defiantly have a charging and or electric problem after charging battery and running ski for a bit it ends up dead again!! now just to find where it is at.. boo!! As for your relief from wife and kids I am glad it is here helpin us newbs to the sport instead of screwin off smokin weed or something lmao!! just becareful the wife might come in and limit your forum time haha j/k well for me I am pretty mechanically inclined I can lift or lower most anything I love the suspension stuff I have done some motor swaps and what not just not really deep into the motor and unfortunately not to good at electrical problems!!

Weed........

Nope, ..........gave that up years ago. I think it's one of those fads you go through to hang out with your clich'e......but, not my thing.

As for your charging system, first.........you need to get a multi meter (el cheapo at Wal Mart) and test your battery on the setting 20 VDC, then, see how much electricity you have in the battery.

Now, start the engine and do it again. If there is no change or if that multi meter is not showing around 14 volts DC,..........then yes, the charging system is out. Lets just hope its a fuse. Because the 951 regulator/rectifier is built into the MPEM.....the stupidest thing they ever did!......all others are just a simple replacement.

i've had problems with my seadoo 96 xp i had the same problem there was a noise comming from the rear electrical box when starting this is what i did i removed the starter set it on the floor and took my battery charger and hooked it up and found that the starter was goofing up the starter relay seloind causing the battery ends to spark and or arc. you'll find that if the starter doesnt turn on the charger your starter is shot. If the starter spins freely on the charger reinstall in ski and start checking the voltage at the stator and in the rear electical box and find out what the voltage is comming across regulator. if its above 16.6volts or below 12.6volts you have a problem. the stator maybe have gone bad or the regulator has gone bad.

Short.. on time.. money.. and I guess in my ski

ok been working alot on my new job and have not went to buy a multi meter (I have one at my house with most all my tools in san antonio about 3hrs form where I am staying for work now and where the ski is ) but I charged the battery Sunday and left it in ski over night sure enough dead Monday.. Charged it again put a test light I had down here in series (between the negative post and the negative cable with the dess off of the post) and the light comes on but only dem.. should there be a draw on the system with everything off or do I have short as I think.. I know the next thing to do is start unplugging stuff to see when the light goes off and there I find what is drawing.. But I am setting here at work.. but not really working haha

Ps From what I have seen so far the charging system is working I havent tested it but once I get it running i can run/start/stop fine but once getting home or sitting is when it is dead

oo sorry but for ppl reading I have pulled all fuses in mpem and the one in the electric box... all of em good
Thanks again to all for help  <<--- I like the litte cheers guys lol Hope everyone haves a beer for me cause I'll be havein one for yall bout 7 o'clock (I dont get off at 5)

Load charge.....

Royce, ........I don't remember reading on how old your battery is......but from this last post, it's showing signs that it's dead.

Take it down to your local "Autozone" or "Advanced Auto Parts" and they'll do a free load test on it. You can't do that at home. It takes a special machine that they use to test the batteries ability to hold the CCA (cold cranking amps) required to operate your starter system.............

Then, if the battery test good........you may have a live short that is draining your battery. You said there was a spark. Well, like I said, when you initially hook the battery up, the mpem charges up. But after so many seconds (33, I believe), the mpem shuts down all your electricals...........

So, do the load test, then we'll go from there.

Pop....please use the thread starter tool and make a thread with your problem or issue unless your just making a comparison. It's kinda hard trying to work with two troubleshooting issues in one thread..........

Suggestion

I no mechanic, but I had a similar problem with my Polaris a few years ago. It would start up & run really well for about thirty minutes, then the battery would go totally dead. So I went to the shop & picked up a new rectifier thinking that this was the problem. Didn't fix it. As a last ditch effort, I took the the negative battery cable off where it's grounded to the block, cleaned it, & it's run like a champ ever since.

Macgyver?? or just cheap

The battery is 2 weeks old (the guy I got it from put it in the day before I picked up the ski and said he left the dess on post over night after putting it in and thats why he had a charger on it when I came... BS I know now the dess shuts off after 10 mins of no operation) SO the drain fix.. I dont have know how/time/cash to fix this short I looked all over and no findings... Sooo my ghetto rigged fix is (some of you may burn me or maybe just say good a nuff) putting in a battery cut off on the negative cable.. like the ones NHRA requires on all drag cars.. SO anytime skis not running for 30 mins or so just flip the disconnect and no chance to drain!!! So ppl what you think?? I know it doesnt fix it but gets by for now

Ps Snipe thank you for everything but I think you read Pops post a little to quick I dont thing he was askin bout his own problem just sayin somethin that happen to him and how he fixed it.. so it might help me!! thanks Pops
