Hey guys...hope you can help. My issue is high rpm's with no speed but if I feather the throttle I can get it up to speed and it maintains the speed until I let off. I had the ski in the water and ran great and then all the sudden rev'd high and lost speed. I got it to the dock and found it was filling up with water. The carbon ring had slipped back into the rubber boot and was not sealing the shaft. I pulled it back up and put a new clamp on it. Now out of the hole it revs high and barely moves. I pulled the pump when I got home and the cone was full of water instead of oil. Everything seems ok on the pump assembly so I filled it with oil after draining the water and letting the pump dry out. I bolted it all together and still high rpm but won't go unless I feather into it. Here is what I have noticed today...

1.carbon ring has slop on the shaft...is this normal or should it fit snug on the shaft.
2.joint support with the grease fitting rotates freely and moves in and out slightly...is this normal as my buddy has a 97xp and his joint support will not rotate or move at all.
3.while out of the water on the trailer if I start the ski it seems as if the shaft is bent at idle but if I gas it slightly it seems to smooth out.

I did suck up a ski rope about 3 trips prior to this one that was pretty nasty but I got it all out and the ski ran awesome after that until now which has been about 2-3 hours ride time. I'm guessing its a bent shaft from when I sucked the rope up and caused something to fail. Please let me know what you think I should try next.

Thanks again ,
Tony

Sorry to hear ur prob, ajeepman, try turning the PTO clockwise, maybe it loosened up off the crank, or look behind the carbon ring seal, see if the c-clip is there...its a start..cheers:

The clip is there and everything seems tight except the carbon ring has some play init around the shaft and the joint support with the grease fitting rotates. Any other ideas as to what this may be. It is acting like it did when the pump needed rebuilding only this time its not locked up and the drive shaft seems bent or unbalanced.

Bearings and shaft....

You made the comment that you think the shaft may be bent. This may be true. If you have water in your bearing casing for the impeller, you either have a bent shaft (vibration) or you have bad bearings in your impeller. Because your not able to make any speed, I bet the bearings in the pump are shot. If the impeller shaft moves from side to side, the wearing ring has got to have been rubbed over specs by this radial movement.

If you don't think this is the case, then you need to perform the air test on your bearing housing for the pump, sounds like the seal is shot. You are suppose to hold 10 psi pressure for, I forget how long...but it's several minutes.

I took it apart today and the rear drive shaft is bent....the pump is good I think as there is no movement side to side and it would pick up speed but only if I eased into it. Thanks for the replies and does anyone know anyone with a spare shaft for sale? Seadoo is like $210. I found some on ebay but not the correct ones. I found a guy that says to use the 98 xp lmited shaft and convert to the no c clip set up as it is what alot of the racers do. Any truth to that and is it a good idea for a recreational rider?

I hear the carbon ring is a great setup, no bearings to go bad that can sieze up on shaft, but....Great u found the problem. Hit up seadoosource.com, he has new/used ones

gotta love ebay...picked up the entire assembly from spline to spline for $60 shipped and it is the carbon ring setup.

good point......makes sense if you think about it..... if the carrier bearing did lock up on the shaft it would rotate the entire assembly and probably rip the boot and then you will need to decide , do I go down with the ship or abandon ship!!!!!

Thanks again guys!
