Hey guys I have a 2000 Seadoo Speedster and my trailer tires have minor dry rot. Trying to figure out if I should replace them or not. The size of the tires are B78-13 ST. I wasn't sure what a good replacement would be for these if I go about doing so. I also didnt know if these from harbor freight would work since they are an inch smaller. http://www.harborfreight.com/53-inch-x-12-inch-6-ply-rated-tire-with-5-lug-rim-92470.html. If anyone has some good advice Id appreciate it, since I'm not very familiar with trailer tires.

Sadly, I had someone steal my spare off my trailer while my boat was at a shop being inspected. File that under people suck.

Here is a good Q&A that might help.

I decided to make this an opportunity to really be prepared and purchased 2 new tires on rims so I have 2 spares for long trips to the Keys.

You can also buy single tires from e-trailer.

Personally, when it comes to tires, I am not sure I would want to trust a Harbor Freight tire. That is just me, I do not mind inferior one in a blue moon tools, hell, I have a bunch of them that sit and get used once every couple of years. I just do not want to chance a blow out with a sketchy tire that I am not too sure was built to good standards.

Take it for what it is worth, I am sure plenty of folks have purchased cheap HF tires and rims and been very happy. I am just a little paranoid when it comes to rims and tires.

Go to a good tire place where ever you live in the USA....(please at least put your state in your profile) and buy 3 trailer tires in the right size for your boats weight. Get the 3rd one with a rim to use as a spare if you travel a bit towing it to a lake or vacation place.

A smaller tire will PROBABLY NOT carry the correct weight for your boat, gas, trailer weight, misc equipment, etc.
You don't want to blow a tire while towing at 65 MPH. :)

My 99 Speedster trailer came with Goodyear Marathon trailer tires. They are either ST175/80R13 or ST185/80R13. I'll check in the A.M. for you. One of them is still the original tire that is in service, the other has been put into a spare tire duty. I would still be rolling both original tires but I switched to aluminum rims so I just bought one new tire and flipped one over from the original wheels. I would buy these tires again. Many car trailers and landscape trailers use them as well and the hold up great. Your local Goodyear store can get them. They retail for about $70 a tire. I actually just scored 4 of them for my utility trailer for free.

I just changed my trailer tires on my 1997 Speedster trailer.

They were dry-rotted so bad. The DOT code is somewhere in 2006. Obviously way too old. Got them on sale at West Marine.com shipped to store $89 each sitting on galvanized wheels. I have 5.30x12 tires.

now i have two spares!

EDIT:

With tons of tread left.

+1 on Goodyear Marathons. If you put any miles on your trailer towing your boat, don't go cheap. You don't save enough to justify the risk.

Bought Marathons from Sam's club for a great price. Under $80 each if I remember right. It's a fine quality tire that has good reviews on most of the popular boating and fishing sites when the dreaded tire thread pops up all the time.

Now if you tow once to put in and once to pull out each year, then it really doesn't matter what you put on.

Good luck,
