2000 Seadoo RX DI Good Deal??

I'm new to the site, and new to seadoo's (other than rentals)

I recently just put a down payment on a 2000 Seadoo RX DI (From a dealer in Orillia) he was asking 3500 for the machine and 1000 for a brand new trailer. I talked him down to 4800 taxes in.

The hull looks amazing for its age; overall all appearance looks brand new. Due to the machine being winterized we were not able to start her up. But the appearance of the engine looks to be taken care of. Motor is original with 105 hours on it.

This being my first machine, I was wondering if anyone can give me any advice for things to looks out for, is this machine a good machine? Any known issues? Things to watch for?

The dealer is currently holding the machine for me till April and offered me a 30 day warranty starting from Mid May. I have also requested a compression test before I purchase in full and they did not have a problem doing so.

Hi and welcome to the SeaDoo forum,

I know that Canadian prices are higher than here, Blue Book Retail here is $2500.00 so that seems high to me. The other problem, at least to me is the 951 with direct injection, not a good ski if you are planning to do the work yourself. If it were me I would try to find something with a 787 with carburetors.

Also with 100 hrs. on a 951 your about half way to a motor rebuild.

It's even high for Canada. (but it is a dealer)

I always recommend staying away from the Di engines. When they run... they are great, and they get good fuel economy. BUT... when you have a problem, they are hard to diagnose, and they are expensive to fix.

It may look good, but it is a 12 year old ski, and the 951 engine isn't known for it's longevity.

With that said... be there when they do the compression test. The 951 engine should be showing 135 psi on a fresh rebuild. (Cold engine, open throttle, and no extra oil in the jugs) Less than 120, and it's time for a rebuild. Also, since it's a Di... I would want them to check the pressure on the fuel pump, and the air system.

If you do buy it... don't let the warranty expire before getting a real ride on it.

as a last thought... I would look around local for a good used trailer. $1000 is OK for a new trailer... but when you sell the ski, you really don't get anything for the trailer, and a privet sell will almost never happen without a trailer. If you look around, I'm sure you can find a good used trailer for $300 or less, and save $$$.
 
ouch!!

Im not getting the warm and fuzzies anymore! i thought it was priced well. any other machines i seen with the same model and year were selling for over 4000 grand. thought 3500 was pretty good! i checked through Autotrader.ca and kijiji.

what seams to cause the most problems with these machines? i guess im fortune enough to be mechanically inclined. lets hope i didnt get a lemon. however the dealer i bought it from has been around for over 30 years and i hope they like to keep there customers happy, as well as there reputation!

In the states... I would expect to pay $3000 or less for that ski. (on a trailer) If it had brand new engine... $3500. SO... $4800 with taxes is OK, but I would want to it have a new engine for that price.

The Di's have all of their own issues. The quick list is:

1) The 951 engine is not a long life engine. If fed good oil... they can last +300 hrs... but I've seen them give up as soon as 150 hrs for no real reason. (on that thought, have the dealer pull the time from the MPEM)

2) The air system can wear, or have leaks.

3) The fuel pumps don't live forever, and when they go bad, they get intermittent. If you get a sag in fuel pressure, you can kill the engine by running lean.

4) The Regulator is weak, and they needed an upgrade.


Personally... for your first ski... I would look for a ski with carbs. You can get the millennium version of that ski with the same engine, and carbs.
