2000 Islandia Engine Compartment stuck

Ok so I am at wits end. Own a 2000 Islandia that I've had for 5 years now. Long story short, engine was blown (block crack) last year at the beginning of the season. Took me all season to find someone to replace the powerhead, but finally did over last winter. I got the boat back last week and it's running great, however I needed access to the engine compartment to, you know, like fill the oil, and can not get the dang thing open. I know the release cable is actuating the mechanism but no matter what I do in terms of brute force I can not get the deck lid open. Pushing down and pulling the release...have tried everything. The guy who did the work has been very non-responsive to any of my inquiries and of course he's already been paid. But I know he had the hatch completely off for the replacement work. I can't find any online information that would point me to access to the release mechanism and I think that the only recourse is to drill into the deck lid to manually release the latch. ANY assistance out there would be greatly appreciated including hints as to where exactly to drill for best access, as I can't even find an interior drawing for this thing. Thanks.

Well, I'm not that familiar with the exact layout of the Islandia engine lid / compartment... But it certainly made me think what I would do on my boat if something like a cable broke to open the lid? On the Challenger 1800, I think the ski post mount is right there where the latch for the lid is located? I'm wondering if I could remove the ski pole mount and get access to unlatch the lid manually?

I'm not sure if you have something similar on your boat... Take a look to see if you could remove a seat or something to get a hand into that area... before you start drilling.

If you can hear the cable moving the latch... something is just stuck.

Have someone hold the release cable... and then use a little force. it will pop. The worst thing that will happen is you will break the latch.

With that said... and thinking about a secondary access.... there may be a way !!!!!!!! (just popped into my head) If you open the little door where the fresh water cap is... there's a big cover for an emergency fire extinguisher port. If you open that... you may be able to get into it, and pull the release a little. Or at least see the issue. (Don't know for sure, never tried myself)

Yes the cable is attached and is actually actuating something as I can hear it at the latch location and I can feel the tension on the cable when I try to lift up on the hatch. I did try and access the interior at the fire extinguish port but there is too much "stuff" in the way for any access back towards the hatch. I will get me a couple more sets of muscles to try and brute force it while quite possibly using some tooling at the latch point to pop it. It's a pretty tight fit down there though as there is a seal there and a "lip" at the deck. Thanks for the suggestions and I will report back whatever comes of it.

Well here was the final repair...Could not muscle that thing open but got it open far enough to saws all the latch stud. As can be seen, the house that did the engine replacement bingoed the latch protector/base/cover and spring. At least it's now open and order the replacement parts...

Yes but it's open and all oiled up. I've gone through and found the OEM part numbers I need and have them ordered except for the latch stud (PN 204700001). This is listed as an obsolete stud and is not available, however there are many other Sea Doo PNs that look very similar if not the same. I can always CMM what I pulled out and machine one up at work but if an alternate PN is readily available...Again this is for a 2000 Islandia Merc 240EFI version.
