I'm 90% convinced I have a bad safety switch on my 1999 Challenger 1800. Several times last season a great day on the water ended with both motors instantly shutting down. If I twisted the magnetic switch one engine would start, the other wouldn't crank, both would run, stop suddenly, the kids would cry, dad would sputter back to the dock and swear.
Anyone know the best way to bypass/test the switch, before I buy a replacement?

90%....

You have the idea you got a 90% chance your safety switch is bad....well here, let me help you by adding that other 10%.

Yeah, from your descriptions, your lanyard post is bad. Mine went out 2 seasons ago. It starts just like you said. You'll be out ridin, then all the sudden, dead. Then, you might have to wiggle it or put the lanyard on and pull it off several times before it works again. Then, a few minutes later, it dies again....like someone just shorted out the entire electrical system.

The lanyard post is the communication device between the ROM (read only memory) chip and the MPEM (mult purpose electronic module). Over time, the post will slowly lose it's magnetic attraction and the MPEM will lose that communication. When that happens, the MPEM shuts down the engine(s).

You can try and clean it and the lanyard cap. Use warm soapy water or the tip of a pencil eraser to clean the metal clip inside the cap, ......but you'd be better served to go ahead and buy one. They are not that expensive and don't require you to take it to the shop.

Here,..... it's part number 52 for just less than $100 bucks... http://partsfinder.onlinemicrofiche.com/seadooforums/Seadoo_oem/Seadoo_JB.asp?Type=13&A=30&B=26
