2 Stroke or 4 Stroke for Remote Cottage?

I'm looking at either an '03 Speedster 240Hp EFI or an '04 Sportster 4 Tec. My biggest concern is having to cart fuel in. Just want to know, with all things being equal, which of these two engines would I be getting better fuel economy with and longer runs without refilling. Im thinking the 4-tec?
 
I'm thinking you are correct the 4 tec. Probably a lot less maintenance also. Neither boat is exactly a gas sipper.

I think th 240 is the Merc engine. If that is the case, then the 4-tec for sure. The Merc is a good engine and runs very well as long as things are good. As soon as they begin to fail, they can get challenging. The parts and the labor is more expensive. Less is known about them so fewer can help you even if you do the work yourself.

The 4-tec is a very proven engine and can run for thousands of hours. If there is an issue, the codes are easy to pull and MANY have good knowledge to assist you.

For me, easy choice is the 4-tec...

have a Seadoo/Merc dealership in town, so this isn't a huge concern. Is it?

Should I be concerned that there is no hour gauge on the 2 stroke? Would a compression test and maintenance receipts be enough to overlook this? I agree I like the reliability of the 4 stroke, but the extra 5th seat on the 2 stroke and a possible 3rd child in the future, might have to go with the 2 stroke.

If you are fine with paying their labor, then no, not a huge deal. That said, there are MANY unique and special parts on the Merc engine. And unique and special translate to $$$$

A 30 minute or more test ride and a compression test will tell you much. Post the results here,,,

if you spent say $3000 on a rebuild, and you babied it, maintenance was done regularly, stored correctly etc, how many hours could you expect to get out of a 2 stroke? 200? 500? I know there's tons of variables, just ball park figure.
 
The 4tec will get better mileage but they are both going to be bad in the sense that it's a jet powered water toy at a cabin where every driver is going to have the hammer down constantly. :thumbsup:

My biggest concern would be reliability. In which case I would go with the 4tec, they are great motors, many rental shops use them.

That mercury 240 motor has some known weak points, the main one being a plastic oil pump that if it breaks will seize the motor.
 
200 hours on a 2 stroke is the norm. Baby and well maintained you could likely double that. 4 tec engines will go for thousands of hours.

I'll be brutally honest.......I wouldn't even entertain a Merc in a Seadoo. Those boats were a stop gap for Seadoo to transition from 2 stroke to their own 4 stroke. Most dealers won't touch them with a 10 foot pole.

thinking we're going to jump on the 2 stroke, I agree with everyone on the reliability, weak points, parts hard to come by, etc, however looks like the 5th seat will be the seller. Wouldn't want to have to leave one of the little rug rats behind, if ever we had a third. We could entertain a larger, pricier, 7 seater challenger 180, but I don't think its really a remote cottage kind of boat though. Not sure why they didn't put a 4 stroke in the 5 seater speedster frame. Shop said no problem with maintenance, parts and repairs, so that's a plus.
