Looking at a used "96" GTX, should I run double oil the first tank or two, and act like I was breaking the PWC in as if it was new?

Not necessary....

No, unless the engine is newly rebuilt, there is no need to add any extra oil.

If the seadoo is used and not newly rebuilt there is no reason to add anymore than normal oil to run it. Add extra oil only to aid in the break in process.

Welcome to the forum Mirage. Nice ski's there in your avatar!

Thanks, both in my avatar where purchased in 04's, and I love'em, just found a 96 that I thought I might purchase for the heck of it!!!

Someone told me that running double oil would lean it out, I know my 2.5 Merc. loves double oil, just wanted to make sure that Seadoo's didn't have something that was unknown by me!!!

and cost!

and with the cost of oil these days, I wouldn't think your wallet was a bottomless pit.
Shoot, I'm trying to figure a way to use my "french fry" oil!

Just one final note, the SeaDoo has been sitting for a while and I only want to run double oil and do the "break-in" procedure again... I won't run double oil but for 2 tanks max!!! Thanks guys, got this forum on my favorites, so I'll be here often!!!

Cool!

Well, there is the old saying, "rather safe than sorry". If you feel more comfortable running your oil a bit rich, then that's cool. But I don't know if I'd go quite double.........
And Karl, my boat goes fast enough, but I wonder if it would make it shine better. That's an idea, I could rub it in the hull like a wax!........It would even be water repellant!...........

Lean Or Rich

This does bring up a interesting question. Wouldn't adding more oil the the fuel actually lean out the fuel mixture?....more oil..less gas = leaner?

When you add extra oil to the fuel it becomes richer due to the added lubrication... remember the oil burns with the fuel also. The main purpose of adding extra oil for break-in is to add an extra lubrication cushion so as to keep the heat down to a minimum and add in the friction of the NEW moving parts. If you add extra oil to an old engine it will have a tendency to foul the plugs and not burn off completely and cause the pistons rings to stick and cause early fatigue. So in reality adding more oil to an old engine will cause more problems than it is worth.

My Theory

For a 2 stroke, that has sit for a long period, the guy couldn't remember the last time out, I want the extra lubrication... Remember I am going to act as if I am breaking the craft in again, and will not go WOT, for any length of time, and for only two tanks and not every tank...
I run a Merc. 2.5 that turns 9000+rpm and every spring it gets double oil for 2 tanks, during this time I am all over the rpm band but not the same rpm for any length of time, last year the motor was re-ringed, and all the old parts where in excellent condition, so I guess for some it may be considered overkill, I just feel safer, going to this trouble...

THANKS, for all input!!!

No, the seadoo is a 2 stroke! It's not a high rpm machine... it's your repair money...just my advise from 33 yrs experience working with 2 strokes and 8 yrs experience working in a Kawasaki and Honda repair shop full time ...I haven't much else to say.
