1999 Speedster SK problems

Hi everyone

This is my first post so be gentle with me!!

Just had my 1999 Speedster SK out for the first time after buying it from the States. Before taking it out I had changed the battery and the spark plugs and the engines started first time.

Had the boat running at 1500-2000rpms for 10-15 minutes just to warm her up a little and then cranked it up a little. Anyway, after running the engines at full speed for 10-15 minutes, the port engine just died and would not start again, did not even turn over just a 'clunk' when I hit the start button. The other engine worked fine so I got back to shore and took a look, checked plugs etc but still nothing on the 1 engine.

Looking at other posts, I am guessing my first port of call is to clean the Carbs. Is it worth it or should I just rebuild? Is there anything else I need to check out. I have a manual already.

Thanks for your input guys

Hi Davo,
The first thing i would check is, does the motor turn over.
Take plugs out and try to turn motor(counter clockwise) by turning the shaft using hand or pipe wrench, if it turns then starter could be dead, if it wont turn you may have seized it and you will need to remove the motor.
Normaly if it's carb's it will restart and chug a bit before dying, the fact that it wont restart and it goes clunk, sounds seized. I have made it a habit to check my telltale to make sure i have water flow on each motor.
I am looking into fitting water temp (engine temp) gauges so it is easier to see what is going on. Having no temp gauges suck!!:ack:

Seized engine

Checked the manual last night, if it is a seized engine the manual does not seem to cover this, what are my options? and more importantly what is this going to cost me!:ack:

Welcome to the seadoo forum Davo. It's kinda hard to tell you what its gonna cost without looking at the damage. It could be just rings or pistons or a bent crank...it depends on what caused it... no oil, no cooling, ect.
The manual will only tell you how to disassemble and reassemble. you'll have to tear it down it if did seize.

Issues

Just took another quick look at the boat while I had 10 minutes, when I try and start the engine that I am still having issues with I get a pretyy loud click/clunk and then a high pitched wining noise that continues as long as the start button is depressed, does this indicate that the starter is faulty or does this mean then engine still could be seized? I have not had time to check the crankshaft yet.

engine ?....

Have you tried to roll the engine over counter clockwise by hand as "gunsrunner" suggested. This is the first thing I'd be doing. If your motor is shot, you'll be able to feel it while turning over by hand.

You need to remove the grey plastic cover over the shaft by removing the two plastic wing nuts on either side, then the cover will slip right off. Then, you need to pull the plugs and try to turn over the motor........

Screwed!!

So I got the cover off the crankshaft, removed plugs, and tied to turn it anti-clockwise. Its stuck fast........... only about 3-4mm play.

Seems like I got screwed over by Marine World in Wichita, they were supposed to have done checks on theboat prior to me getting it shipped up to Canada and after 15 mins this is what I get..............

If I lived nearby it would be going right back to them..

Anyway, you live and learn, I guess boat dealers are no better than some car dealers!!

OK, life goes on, I am not much good at mechanical work but I spent extra on a boat from a delaler than buying privately, thinking I would get some kind of quality assurance, so I dont have a lot available for repairs, so I guess I'm doing it myself...

I have the manuals and guess I need to take the engine out to assess the problem, I figure I can get it out without much trouble but then what???

What do I need to look for once I get the thing out of there?? What are the things to look for specifically?

Where would be the best place to order the parts from?

Thanks for your help guys!! I really need it!

What I would do is follow the manual and pull the head off while it's in the boat. Give it a look and see if the piston's got a hole in it or if it looks good and no apparent reason of a seizure. It might be something else. If it is in bad condition, pull out the engine. It might be easier and cheaper to buy a re-manufactured engine than trying to rebuild that one. Check for the damage first. Pull the head off and report back what you see. We'll go from there.

New engine

I have resigned myself to the fact that I will need a new engine in the Speedster, although I am planning to finally get the top end off this weekend and take a look inside.

May sound like a dumb question, but what type of engine do I need to replace it? (I am at work at the moment and dont have access to my manual) as I am sure i read it is a 717 Rotax engine in the Speedster SK, but I have seen boats advertised for sale that are also 99 Speedster SK's that claim to have 787 engines??

Also, could this engine be known as anything else, i.e what PWC are these compatible with as ome of the engines I have seen advertised just state Seadoo RXP engine etc

Thanks

Any thoughts?

Any thoughts on my lat post guys?

Also is there anywhere that I can cross reference part numbers, I have seen a few items on ebay that I may look to purchase, the ad says they do not know which model the seats come from but does give a part number, is there anywhere I can type this in to get an idea of whether it will fit my boat?

Here are the link to the item:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=119142&viewitem=&item=320189813266

Wondering these seats would fit in the rear of my 1997 Challenger 1800, any thoughts?

Thanks

New engine required

Ok, so finally got the time to strip down the seized engine at the weekend, and as I feared its pretty much shot.....

So rather than try and rebuild this one, I have decided it would be simpler and probably as cost effective to replace the whole thing.

So, where is the best/cheapest place to obtain a used 717 Engine? It is worth taking a chance on one from Ebay?

Thanks

Issues

Just as an afterthought.....

When I stripped the top end of the engine down, there seemed to be 'baked' oil on top of the piston, that would seem to indicate that the engine wa sgetting oil, but maybe overheated???

Would that seem correct? Obviously dont want the same thing to happen when I get the new engine in there.

Thanks

I would go to " www.sbtontheweb.com " and check out getting a re-manufactured engine. There is also a list of things that you might want to purchase with the engine. If you buy on e-bay, it's buyer beware. I would also check all the cooling lines on the engines to be sure it was getting cooled and find the problem of the old engine to prevent it from happening again.
