I have a 1999 GTX RFI that reportedly had a top end rebuild when I purchased it. It smoked and good bit at first and I was told that the rings needed to seat. I ran through waht I was told to be a ring seating process. (30 minutes at or near idle, cool down for 30, 30 minutes at 20% throttle, cool down for 30, 30 minutes at 50% throttle, 30 minutes cool down, 30 minutes at 90% throttle, 30 minutes cool down and rings should be seated) Smoking has decreased and the machines runs great. However, I do have to keep some throttle on it at all times as it will not idle without dying. I am also changing the plugs after 1 or two full day of riding. Just courious if anyone could help with the idle issue and shed any light on how long it should take to stop fouling the plugs. (on the 5th or 6th set now).

Thanks in advance for any insight.

First... the break in procedure is not the way I would have done it... but it's too late for that.

Second... smoke is not from rings needing to be broken in. Even on a 4-stroke engine... the rings should seal back the oil if the rebuild was done right. On a 2 stroke, you don't have oil in the bottom half, so there is no mechanical reason for extra smoke.

Smoke = oil

On your engine, you have a center rotary valve and gears. The oil system feeds those gears. If your smoke is VERY heavy... then those seals could be leaking. If the leak is small... then the smoke will go away after a minute or two of running. If the leak is big... it will always smoke, it will foul plugs, and be impossible to start after it sits. (let's hope it's not that bad)

Personally, I would change the plugs, and go run it... just stay away from full throttle and constant throttle settings for the first tank of fuel.

As far as the poor idle... your plugs could be fouled because of the extra oil, and the way you were running it for your break-in. I would put in a fresh set of plugs, and check it again.

If it's still low... you can bring it up a little with the idle screw on the throttle body
