Hi
Was wondering if someone could help. I have a 1999 GTI I've owed for several years. It's always ran great. The other day I was on the water and it just died. No chirps, gauge movement, or starter action. Got back home and checked fuses/wiring. Here's what I've found:
1. The 15A fuse inside the rear box (off the solenoid) was burnt.
2. The 5A fuse at the MPEM was also burnt
I replaced both fuses and without even placing the key on the lantern, they fried again. Don't have access to wiring diagram, premium membership evidently takes a few days while they wait on paypal ;-(
Notes:
If I take the connector off the magneto and replace the fuses, they're fine but I don't have any chirping or gauge movement, i.e. everything still appears dead.
Suspect the MPEM or Magneto at this point. Took the magneto cover off, everything looks clean inside but I have not taken the flywheel off to expose the actual magneto.
I've been tracing wires and making my own wiring diagram. Here are some observations:
1. Plug coming out of the Magneto has four wires. Yellow and Yellow/Blk are shorted together (not necessarily abnormal I would guess). Black and Black/Red are shorted togeter and to ground (again, not necessarily abnormal).
2. The Black wire coming out of the Magneto ends up at pin17 on the MPEM. Doing a resistance check between pin 17 and one leg of the 5A fuse reveals connectivity. This puts a ground at pin 25 (one of three flat spade pins) and if the 5A fuse is installed, a ground at pin 24 (another flat spade pin), and if the 15A MPEM is installed, a ground at 26 (the other spade pin). So essentially, all three flat spade pins (24, 25, 26) are shorted to ground. Pin 26 goes all the way back to the 15A fuse off the solenoid in the rear box essentially shorting the pos terminal of the battery to ground, blowing the fuses.
Other observations within the last few weeks before breaking down:
1. Have had some problems getting the starter to kick over. Have to press the start button a couple of times to get it to engage. Suspect a weak battery, although I did charge it. Once I get the starter to engage though, it starts fine. Also runs great.
2. When placing the key on the lantern, sometimes it beeps, sometimes it doesn't. Can't remember how many beeps it normally has.
Anybody have any ideas on how to further isolate the problem. I know the MPEM/Magnetos are very expensive and want to isolate completely before purchasing.
Any help would be appreciated.
Jeff
