I just took out my 98 xp limited (i have had it for about a week), for the first time with a passenger. After riding for a while we tiped over and the ski capsized. My buddy had a real hard time getting back on so it fliped over around 10 times causing it to fill with water, which in turn caused the ski to stop starting up, and had to be towed in. I read the manaul and took all the steps i could to try and get it started back up but no dice.. I already took off the spark pulgs and cranked the engine to get all the water out..I am gonna say about a gallon of water shot out, and i changed the spark plugs, please help.. i will take any advice i can get. thanks

Did you try spraying WD40 down in the cylinders? Is the engine even turning over?

98 xp limited

:confused:yes i sprayed lube down into the spark plug holes...it will not turn over. When the spark pulgs are off the engine will crank over and over but when the plugs are in place it stops after the 3rd attempt and i have to reconnect the safty key. I am gonna go back today and see if i can get it started... dosent this kinda stuff happen all the time? i mean its made for the water...do you think its a serious problem?

Check electrical/electronic box for water intrusion. Open it up and make sure it is dry inside. It's supposed to be watertight, but extended submersion really pushes the boat.

Do another round of cranks with the spark plugs out AND tilt the boat to make sure any water lingering in the exhaust is draining out.

Change the spark plugs since firing when wet AND with oil could foul them.

I would get it fired up as quickly as possible so as not to lead to rust and corrosion and possible engine seizure. Remove the spark plugs and leave the caps on the grounding post. Turn the engine over to remove the water from the cylinders. Spray a little wd-40 in the cylinders to help displace the water. Hit the starter for a few seconds at a time letting it cool down abit while trying to get the water out. When it seems like all the water is out insert the spark plugs and get it started. Use the choke or a little fuel and injector oil as a premix to help fire it up. Don't use starting fluid. If it doesn't fire up repeat the procedure. Pull the spark plugs, hit the starter, insert spark plugs get it to fire up. Time is of the essence. the longer it takes to get it fired up the more chance of damage to the internal engine components.

I hope this helps Keep me posted.

ok so i got the batt charged all the way to full, cranked the engine to get the water out (all thats left is mist), then i changed the spark pulgs.. it sounds like i am getting closer to getting it but it still wont start... i think I am gonna have to bring it to a shop... how big of a problem could this be? like in dollars?

just keep at it. it will go. take it to a shop and it will sit till august, then they will tell you you wrecked the motor when really they did by leaving it sit. big car battery and jumper cables. maybe some fuel line anti freeze-aka dry gas. the alcohol absorbs the water. mix it with a tiny bit of 2-stroke oil. put a little down plug hole. crank it slow so it runs down to bottom. then spin it out.

Derek is correct.......

:agree: with derek. Take it to a shop, you lose!.......motor will seize and it will cost you more than the ski is worth.

I'm working on a 650cc Suzuki (Tiger Shark) right now that sank. I finally got it running but it took quite some time to get there. It seems the oil emulsifies with the water and takes sooooooooooo long to get out and dry up before the start.

I know alcohol will absorb water but I've never tried derek's trick. Sounds logical though. I don't think you'll have to worry that the alcohol will damage the motor, with all the mix of water, fuel, oil and........?

Keep at it, you will get it if your persistant. Take it to a shop, your screwed.:ack:

Seriously, keep at it. I've seen a totally flooded motor take forever to get going. But my gawd, when it got going again, I thought Lazarus was going to speed off with the boat!

You are screwed by going to the shop. So if this thing still takes a dump on you after trying to restart, then you are where you are supposed to be.

I am worried if i dont get it to the start soon it will make it worse off then it already is, plus i have no idea how to work on these engines.. they are nothing like a car or outboard motor i have ever worked on. I have tried all the ways you all are suggesting but I cant get this thing going for the life of me ... I am at a loss..believe me i am the last person to want to take it to the shop but i got nothing else to go on.. What should i watch out for as far as the shop tryin to rip me off

they are exactly like outboards. what should you watch for at the shop? the front door. check for spark. ground 1 plug wire and hook the other one to a plug and hold it against the motor. crank. do you see spark?

i too have seen many flooded i/o ob's and skis and my new quad with less than 3hrs on it and what i like to do is pull the plugs get the majority of the water out and then ill choke it and give it full throttle , we all know more air = more comp and the extra fuel will help with getting the water out of it along with some what keeping it from locking up . after i see a bit of raw fuel coming out of the spark plugs and reinstall them and fire that puppy up . we had a outboard float upside down for 2 weeks in the ocean and when recovered it ran great but you need to get this thing going fast !!!!!!!!:agree:

I flipped mine a few times and found the easiest way to get rid of all water in cylinders is if have a buddy around and flip it upside down on land and hit the starter button .. It's not that heavy

Did the best i could

I have tried everything, i got all the water out, i even changed the carbs (they were soaked) and i still havent gotten it to start.. As much as i hate to do it i have to bring it in to the shop.. Any advice on what to watch out for as far as the shop trying to rip me off would be greatly appreciated.. ( please dont tell me not to bring it to the shop again, there really is nothing else i can do and i would like to enjoy the rest of my summer) Also my oil pump did not work when i first got the ski so the guy who sold it to me said to just mix the oil with the gas... is this ok? i use a 50:1 mix

spark?

Do you have spark?

If he's told you to use premix, did he use a block off plate on the pump? It's on the front of the motor. If he didnt' and the magneto is open, then you may have flooded it with water!......

Use a mirror if you have to, but look at the front of the motor. You'll see a nice, smooth round cover. In about the middle, if he blocked this oil pump off, you'll see a small plate with 2 screws holding it on. It will be kinda oblong. IF not, the oil pump may still be on. You just don't want to see a hole there.
