So, I decided to change my pump oil, bought the boat in 2005, does not have an visible hour meter. The oil has never been changed by me in 9 years. Everything was going good, the oil actually looked pretty good, good color, no water contamination, and fairly thick, so probably did not need to change it, but I had to know. Put the cap on, added a little loctite 518, and new o ring per the manual, but the fill hole screw gave me a hard time threading in, when I actually thought it was going in, it was cross threaded. So I used a few choice words, and tried to thread in the other impeller, no dice, it just would not thread in, and I was not going to cross thread in this one two.

So is this common? Is there a trick to getting that screw to go in? I think the threads may have been messed up on the way out, causing the problem. So I ordered two new covers, 13 dollars a piece, I could have been on the river this weekend If I had ordered them in advance. I suppose I could have used an insert or heli coil, did not want to take a chance on getting water in the hub.

What do you guys use in lieu of Loctite 242, I used loctite medium, the blue stuff?.

This has gotten a little silly, I got the other pump screw to go in and thread just fine, but it did not seat, it just went all the way in, and fell inside the cover. Is this really the way it is designed? I did not put hardly any torque on it at all. Well I have the new covers on their way; however, I don't want to have to this more than twice.

Any advice?

They are 1/8" NPT pipe thread--meaning tapered threads. Someone previously went overboard possibly. A lot of hands could have been in there before you.

Thanks, that makes sense, good thing I have two new ones comming, I will just replace them. I hate redoing work, but you live and learn. I guess the good news is that there are no leaks in the pump, like I said, this pump oil has not been changed in 8 years that I know of, and there wasn't a hint of water in it, it was clean as a wistle.
