1998 SeaDoo GSX LTD - Taking on Water

Not open for further replies.
I took my machines out for the first time this summer and noticed when we came back the one was completely full of water. After looking around I think I found the issue. The carbon seal on the one is completely different than the other and the rubber boot up on the engine side seems to be completely missing / broken off. I am wondering what the actual boot / seal is called that I need to replace? Looks like some aftermarket seals on the one? Luckily we did not sink.. she was full.

Two different types.
The one not leaking is a carbon seal.
The other one is a double lip seal. The double lip seal is installed in a housing with a bearing. Has this seal ever been greased?

Plenty of other places for water to get in the hull. The torn boot is not the cause of the leak. PTO boot keeps grease / in water out. PTO boot is the same on both machines. To find your leak back in the water on the trailer and run it.

Also you can fill the hull up with water while it’s on the trailer. Make sure you put enough in it to cover the drive shaft. You can see where the water is leaking out.

yea did that, no water seems to be leaking out anywhere in the driveway when I filled it up with the hose. I did not have it running though.

torn boot not the cause... damn.. was hoping there was atleast something to point fingers at.

not greased recently by me... no. Ill tap some greese into her while I work through the water issues.

so its called the PTO boot ? Its missing a clamp.. and totally looks like an animal chewed off where its supposed to clamp .. I was sure that is where water would be coming in.

The one leaking has been switched to the old carrier bearing seal setup and since the PTO boot is messed up and the clamp is missing someone has been messing with it before.

If the driveshaft is for a carbon seal setup like your other ski then there’s a groove cut in the shaft for the snap ring. This groove is going to be right where the carrier bearing seal should ride causing a big gap and a big water leak. This is my guess for your water leak.

Only way to know for sure is to pull the pump and driveshaft.

ok so I greased up in both the fittings and I could visibly see the drive shaft pull itself back and along with some greese came out the side of the fitting.. I wonder if its squirting the grease out of the grove for the snap ring.. maybe all it was last year was grease holding the water out. We shall find out.

the accordion boot setup is stock for that ski. You can find replacement kit by web searching Seadoo Carbon seal kit.
Places I've found leaks (yes all these areas I've seen..lol):
1) coolant lines off - follow all coolant lines to verify connection. Like the right side of the engine block, and under the exhaust pipe, and where they connect through the hull.
2) the carbon seal boot (driveshaft accordion boot) old and no longer applying enough pressure (it's designed to act like a spring) against the carbon seal to keep water out.
3) Missing fangs in the jet nozzle. There are two tubes in the nozzle that stick in the jet stream. They go to the mechanical bilge system (the 2 plastic block inside and at the bottom of the back of the hull). If they are missing then pressurized water will be push into the hull through that system rather than sucking it out of the hull.
4) Holes in the hull.
5) broken plastic nuts around steering cable & reverse cable.

I did notice one of the white "fangs" was missing off this one that has water coming into it. The other ski has two white plastic things going into the jet stream, the one with water coming in only has the one attached, could this be the source of water leak? and if so, how to get a new plastic cap on there?

Guaranteed leak! I repaired mine several years ago by removing the jet pmp nozzle and getting a plastic hose barb (3/8" or 5/16 I think) from ACE Hardware store and fitted it into the hole. I copied it to be the length of the remaining fang by trimming it. After fit was good I JB Welded (epoxy) into place and let it fully cure. Good as new!

I think I am going to disconnect this hose from the inside and seal it shut on the inside hose. This way if this is the problem water should not be able to get in. So if I see less water then I will know this was the root cause and can go about removing the jet pump nozzel to get at it.

With that white plastic tube missing the pump will force high pressure water into the hull instead of vacuuming it out. That is definitely one cause of you flooding issue.

what are these white "fangs" actually called, any idea? I am looking now for the replacement part.
