Reproted as newbie months ago that i had bought a 1998 gti and hadn't got it to last one outing. Got lots of advice from the forum about the old fuel lines to late i'm afraid as i had already taken it to a service guy. It was there for ages and had them stumped as they'd already done a carbo kit yet ran rough after short use. I actually told them on one of my many inquiries about the old grey fuel lines and they laughed at my using the internet lol. After weeks they reported that they'd fixed it and when i asked they said that for some unkown reason the little filter in the carbi was clogged. You guys were right all along. They said they flushed and replaced the fuel lines, so 7 weeks and $700 mostly labour i picked up yesterday. My querie is i had a look this morning and it appears they have only replaced the fuel line running from the filter to the engine. Still lots of grey lines running out of tank and running places. Should i replace theses as well? And if so the old grey lines look like they're crimped on somehow, how do you get theses off? Thanks guys if anyone can help.

All of the lines from the fuel tank flow to the Fuel Filter Ass'y and will be filter out there. The one that is not filtered out there is the line that connects at the Fuel Filter Ass'y to the carb itself. This line would be the one responsible for breaking down and clogging the fuel filter in the carb itself. That is the only one that needs changing, but in time you might still replace them all.

Hope this helps,
Vic

Rule of thumb...if it has gas or just vapor from the fuel it will break down and accumulate in the carbs. Isn't that where all the lines end up anyway... For the price of saving $2.00 in Fuel lines, why take the chance. The clamps on the ends of the old lines can be cut off with side cutters. Buy new stainless steel clamps to replace the old ones as well. they are also cheap in a box of 10 or something. If you have any other questions give us a shout...oh, and the INTERNET thing...we are knowledgeable experienced people connected through the internet...
