1998 GTI MPEM module question

Can you swap out MPEM modules? I have a 1996 GTI module do they interchange?

Electronically... they are the same... but... they are mechanically different. The 96 has wires hanging out, and it's all on bullet connectors. The 98 has square waterproof plugs in it.

Modules.....NO after '96 they changed the electricals. The engines are same. If you had a complete E-box, YES, the '96 box will run the engine, but you will be spliceing the accessories (gauges)wires.
