I bought this used this season. It initially performed without failure. Started having trouble with starter engagement, would spin but not turn engine. I was always able to get started by hitting button a couple times. Assumed starter drive was not engaging. Now however it has died. Kids were riding across lake and it simply shut off. Have found battery fuse (15amp) in MPEM was blown, replaced and immediately blew again. Started unplugging things and putting in fuses. Have found when unplugging connection going to stator it will not blow. Of course it will not start either as there is no trigger coil signal. Question is on a 98 is the regulator/rectifier integrated into MPEM? I have continuity to ground on the three leads coming out of stator, is that normal? Or is the problem the stator? Thanks for any help. Learning as I go...

its possible, that, how you mentioned, you had to hit button a few times to engage the starter to flywheel, that possibly there is metal shavings inside the stator assy grounding out the unit, thus, pop'n the fuse...

Skitime;

I am having the same problem as you. I am blowing the 15A fuse labelled battery on the MPEM. I also sometimes blow the 15A fuse inside the electrical box where the stator/ ignition coil is located. The fuses only blow when I plug in the cable that connects to the top of the electrical box. The rectifier should be located just outside the electrical box. I am also guessing it is a bad stator/ignition coil. Let me know what you find out.
