1997 SPX not rectifier, intermittent miss

I have a 1997 SPX that has a constant off-on miss? At full throttle it will cut out kinda like 2 seconds on then 2 seconds off. I already changed the rectifier, didn't solve the problem. Does this ski have an electric fuel pump? Any help would be appreciated. Robert

Are you just bouncing off the rev limiter? It could be an ignition, or fuel prob… but if your wear ring, or impeller is showing wear… you would get enough RPM’s on the top to have the computer cut the ignition.

What RPM are you at when it happens?

:agree:
You are hitting the rev limiter. Check the wear ring & impeller.

I don't actually know, I don't have an RPM guage on here. Just anything over half throttle will start this hit & miss action. It is consistent though like electrical, just my thought.

what you are saying does sound like its hitting the rev limiter now....since it stays consitant.....rpms up rpms down, rpms up, rpms down, sounds exactly like a rev limiter

If your impeller & wear ring are if excellent condition, maybe you have the wrong pitch impeller installed.

1997 SPX rev limiter location

I'm going to replace my rev limiter on my '97 SPX, can someone guide me as to its location. thanks

my 96 has it in the mpem. You can however use an aftermarket and bypass. I would invest in a tiny tac first so you have an idea what your rpms are to begin with. When you say half throttle does that mean the throttle lever is sticking straight up, and if so, how far up does it have to move before the cable slack is taken up. Mine has to come a ways up as to not stretch cable at WOT. This will have a bearing on what circuit in the carbs could be at fault, if fuel issue.

sounds like it could be dirty carb filters, enough fuel get through them for half throttle or full throttle for a few seconds, but prolonged full throttle will cause it to stumble when it can't supply enough fuel and then it recovers shortly after. I've seen this several times before, sometimes it doesn't even stall, just stumbles a little bit.

does this sound like what it is doing?

It stumbles but it is consistent with its timing, the stumbling time. It consistently has power for 2 seconds then no power for 2 seconds, never any different, it makes me think it is something electrical or maybe the rev limiter. I'm thinking if it was fuel related then it would stall at different times not consistent in its timing of stalling, as it is consistent but only after we give it more than half throttle.

I would start with cleaning the carb filters, it's free and is pretty simple once you get the carbs off. They always seem to be dirty.

Is this happening while on the water? Or are you doing this at home on the trailer?
