I am new here and recently bought 2 1997 SPX's. One has a 100 hp engine, the other a 110. The 100 has the surging problem and I will check the fuel lines and the rectifier, thanks for the posts. The 110 hp though will rev incredibly high if out of the water and will continue to run even if I pull the plug wires, the lanyard and the choke. It's all I can do to stop it from revving so high and stop the engine. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance. Robert

someone will soon let you know about the reason it stays running....but there was another like this today....check by spraying wd-40 around your carb gaskets and intake manifold gaskets while the ski is running and see if you can hear a change rpms go up or down.....also do you have to rev it or just start it out of water to make the rpms rise on their own?

Look down the page there is a post called
Running on trailer question
I'm having same issues. Alot of good info in that post. I'm in the process of elimination!!

In the water the jet pump has a load on it so it is less bound to do it in the water...

I'll post more information for you to try later today when I'm on my own puter...

haven't checked the one for air leaks but I did put a rectifier on the other one, still the same surge problem. I guess I'll try new fuel lines next

I could be wrong but in 97 the spxs had the 787/800 motor in them, which are 110 hp. I didnt think you could put a 720 in them.

Am I correct?

I'm not sure, I just purchased these and they are my first skis. I do know the previous owners had the engines rebuilt now one has a 110 hp and the other 100 hp.
