Guy at my local classifieds posted a 1997 Speedster w/twin 651cc engines for trade with a river boat but he told me he is willing to sell it for $3700 with brand new (few month old) trailer. All services made by local Seadoo dealer.

Are these boat reliable?

It fits in my budget perfectly.
Going to see it after work to take a 1st look at it (suppose to be in GREAT condition)

Thanks for your input!

Besides rip'n ur around, is it for you, or u and g/f-wife, or u/wife/kids..etc. Depend'n on how many people you got roll'n and your intentions...? Hit the forum back up w/ more feedback.

Would be for wife and me (we are young couple), no kids, some passengers sometimes, and used on the bay (calm waters) and fresh water lake/river.
I also want to be able to pull a tube and do some fishing (but rarely) from it.

Make sure you compression test the engines. also some other thing to look over would be the pumps, make sure you have a good look in both sides of the pumps. And youll forsure want to test drive as well. If the guy dosent want to start it id stay away.

yes, he is willing to let me do all these things. I have a check list of things to do ready thanks to this forum.
I'm going by myself to take a look after work and if it look good (cosmetic), I will be going again with someone that have mechanical knowledge.

I wanted to make sure 1st that it is a reliable boat and suitable for me.

Perfect boat then....:hurray:
Just sold my 96" Sportster, but I had installed some flush mount rod holders, (Bass Pro Shop). Things worked perfect, no more jamm'n rods in o-sh** handles, or kick'n them....

How did you make out?
I thought all 97 Speedsters had 717 motors?
Any idea how may hours on the motors? If not, the dealer can read them for you.

Well I went to look at it yesterday. Boat was dirty (seats needs to be replaced...they are not really cracked but there is some kind of mold on them (see pic.) ) but the boat itself is in excellent shape (haven't see a single crack/dent), motor compartment looked clean and motor started immediately.
Trailer look new and bimini top look new as well (never been used).
He sounds like he is well informed about this boat so that's a good point.

Don't know what to do now...Can I expect to find a nice clean boat for this price/year

Water trial..

everything sounds good, ut of water. Next thing you know, dump it in lake, and the compression of motor cant tolerate the load from water. Besides, $3700 would be "alright", IF...the motors checked out perfect and "upholstery" was great shape....you got, atleast $600 in upholstery work..

I just went yesterday to take a first look and have to decide if I want to go further with this boat.
He is willing to do in front of me the compression test (he said he check every year...last time it was around 120? does that sound right?) and test ride on water.

120lb aint bad,..I dropped whole crank,rods,pistons..etc, in my first boat, ended up hav'n 130lbs, think the mechanic bored/honed 1 too many times, but motor /boat ran awesome. Ideal on tight motor, 150lbs, anything under 100lbs..:ack:
Ya, give it water trial, and you dig it/runs good, then, you got what you wanted...

yeah I asked about it in this thread: http://www.seadooforum.com/showthread.php?t=12400

Thing is starter is not working (he said he is leaving the area,he ordered a new starter but don't want/have time to change it....fishy....).

And the other one, guy post in Pensacola but he is in new orleans.....

For that price, stud..I'd take the 10 minutes and install that puppy, for the price he's ask'n for, and w/ the 787cc motor, thinks thats a good deal, plus, only 1 motor to work/maintain on...Starter has 3-bolts, and disconnect the 2-cables. Other than that, she'll slide right out, pop the ne one in.

:agree: OK I was thinking about asking him that (that we do the installation). Will call him again today then.

Just found a 2007 Speedster 150, 7hours on it, JBL sound system,SeaDoo cover,3 year warranty, owned by a SeaDoo dealership employee.
He is asking $12500 and I offered him $10000, he said he is going to check with his bank and that it might be possible.
Sounds good no ? :hurray:

Need to convince wifey now :ack:

I just talked with the guy and he agreed on that (that we change the starter for him)...I thought there was something fishy with this guy but he just didn't want to spend extra $$$ on the boat (he didn't want to go to the dealership to replace the starter)

Be Aware

That you cant carry a passenger in the forward seat, it is a 4 seater boat. The reasons are, visibility out the front is cut off, and in a fast turn the bow passenger will get thrown out.

Just so you know that 2007+ these boat is called speedster 150 but 2003-2006 they were called sportster 4-tec. If buyin a 2007 speedster 150 is a little out of your budget have a look at a 2004 sportster 4-tec. In my opinion i like the 4tec motor better then the older 2strokes.

Hey stud, do he have a starter, that needs install'n, or you need to get one, for motor to kick. If so, possibly its the relay and starter is good.?

this Speedster is off my list now.
I'm still REALLY interested in the challenger though (see my other thread)
