1997 Seadoo GTI will start and idle. It reves on the trailer but in the water it wont rev nor go above 5MPH.

At the end of the 2022 season it was having an isue where it would start hard, idle rough and not accleerate so in May 2023 I purchased a new OEM carbonator. It ran great for several months but about halfway in 2023 it started running poorly, specifically it would start and idle but not accelerate or rev up when in the water. I know both cylinders are firing and it revs up when out of the water but in the water it does not. The wear ring seems worn and there are some nicks on the impeller. I noted that the wear ring is out of round and the gap between the impeller changes as it is rotated ranging from approx. 1/64th in (very small) to as much as 1/16 in. Any help in understanding what to do next would be appreciated.

As for not reving in the water, I would start by doing a compression test with a loaner gauge or a known good gauge, after that, try testing the rectifier by putting a volt meter on the battery while it’s running, if the volts are above 14.5 it would need replacing. Other than that, I would be leaning towards a fuel issue, does it idle correctly in the water at 1500 rpm?

yes it idles fine both in and out of the water. I work on dirt bikes so I'm comfortable with that type of carb but the jet ski one is a bit different. Does it have an idle circuit separate from the main? But again, it revs up fine out of the water. it is only when there is resistance to spin that it won't rev up.

Yes theres Pilot jet and a main jet, if your compression is good I would follow @mikidymac carb rebuild thread to rebuild them with a back to OEM kit from OSD marine. If you have compression and spark it’s usually fuel related. Start easy on the water? Interested to see what your compression is

Thank you. yes, it starts easy both on and off the water. I have a good compression tester i use for my 2 stroke dirt bikes. ill test compression later this week. THX

Have you ever gone through the whole fuel circuit. Your filters could be getting gummed up and not allowing fuel to flow.

I have completed the compression test with a reliable tester. Both cylinders are at 130psi. So I'm moving to the fuel circuit now. Ill drain all the fuel, replace the lines and service the carbonator (that was new in May 2023). thank you

1997 Sea Doo gti update: after taking apart the carb and cleaning it, and replacing all the original fuel line with new it started great and ran great in the water.
