Hi, new to the forum, thinking about picking up a 1997 Seadoo GSi. However, I searched the forum did not find any info on this particular model. Original owner, garaged, with trailer in good shape, a little over 100 hours, winterized every year, $1700 neg.

Also need a little more info on compression testing, basically, reassurance that I am going to do this right and not screw up this guy's jet ski. I have some decent DIY mechanical knowledge from wrenching on my jeep, but have never done a compression test.

Disabling the ignition - how to do this? My main question.

After this is done, just remove both plugs - are the grounding towers obvious (pics would be helpful) screw in compression test gauge, crank engine and give full throttle and it will give reading? I've already read about tolerance and acceptable general levels on 2 strokes, but if anyone has specific info on these stats that would be helpful too.

I've also already read about pump oil changes on seadoos, etc so I have done some research but anything else would be appreciated. thanks

the towers to put the plug wires on is out in the open, it will kinda look like two spark plugs.

You got it on compression test, if you need more info search the forum i know there are many topics on it that have been discussed.

The jet pump oil is easy and cheap to change. See below all details are there

i am guessing you want to change your jet pump oil?

its actually a very easy task.

You are going to take the linkage off your VTS on the jet pump nozzle(8 - 10 mm).

then remove the 4 bolts holding the nozzle on(usually 13mm), be careful there are 2 small o-rings on it you do not want to loose.

Place a bucket under the back of the ski, and remove the bolts holding the cone on(usually 10mm or allen screws). When you do this there is one large o ring be careful not to loose. You may be able to man handle the cone off, if not tap with a rubber mallet.

Try to collect a glass of the oil, place a magnet in it and let sit for several days you will be able to see any water settle, also any metal fragments will collect on the magnet(thanks snipe for that tip!!) Also tip the front of trailer up in the air to get the rest of the oil out.

using a putty knife clean all the gunk off where the nozzle and the cone join on the ski. clean the cone out with some parts cleaner.

inspect your big o-ring to make sure its ok, apply a small amount of oil on the o-ring, loosen the allen screw on the cone that you use to fill it back up with oil, apply some loctite to the bolts, and place your cone back on, tightening it up like you would a tire(torque evenly in a star pattern around the cone)

apply loctite to the nozzle bolts, place your nozzle shroud back on and tighten bolts down in same fashion.

then reattach your vts linkage.

it is rather simple i did both my skis for first time took maybe 45 mins, used the advice snipe, karl, and others gave me and was pretty easy

(also got some castrol synthetic oil from autozone instead of seadoo, much cheaper and is the same stuff)

Hope that helps and your pump will only take about 4-6 ozs of oil.

Thanks for the response! There was actually a good video I saw on changing the pump oil too, doesn't look to hard except for just good old fashioned patience and muscle to remove some stuck parts.

I did some searching on the compression test, I read something about how you either have to disable the starter (unless by grounding the plugs this indirectly does that) or press both the start and stop buttons at the same time or you could cause problems. This is the only part I am unclear about...

nah...put plug wires on gorund post, (might be located on mag cover, with orange plastic sleeves), ground the plugs, thread compression tester in 1 hole, hold throttle, have other hole open (no plug in it), then push start button and hold for 8-12 seconds. Look at read'n, depress the air, and do again, 2 more times, to get average reading. Then proceed to do other hole..
