Hello! I hope someone can help me because I have been racking my brains trying to figure this out. Last Thursday I brought my 1997 Seadoo GS home from storage to start to get it ready for the season ahead. I charged the battery (disconnected and out of the craft of course) and then installed it and hooked it back up. I put the lanyard on and got those familiar two beeps, choked the machine a little and hit start and she fired right up. I shut it off after running it for about 5 or 6 seconds and walked away happy. Then friday morning i went outside to check things over again and put the lanyard on and no beeps, however the red oil light came on and the fuel gauge activated. I wondered why there was no beeps but tried to roll it over and it would roll over but just not fire. I checked for spark and there was lots of spark and lots of gas getting to the motor. I left for day puzzled. Friday night i came home and tried it again and whola! 2 beeps and it started right up no problem. I left for this weekend and just got back today (Sunday) and tried it again, no beeps today and no start. :( What is going on with this machine, it just seems to work when it wants too.

Things I have tried:
I cleaned the DESS Post with soapy water.
I tried both DESS Keys neither of which produce any beeps.
I tried pressing the start button 5 times without the lanyard, nothing happened.
I checked all the connections going to the DESS posts as well as the beeper, all connections seemed good.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Update: beeper might not be working, DESS might actually be working.

Ok so i disconnected the beeper and hooked up a test probe to the power wires that go to the beeper and then put the lanyard on and got two quick readings of 1.9 volts and 1.6 volts. Is this the 'beep, beep'? If so then it would appear that the mpem is recognzing the dess key.

So then I am left with this:

Key Works
It has spark
It it is getting fuel, (i know this because after rolling it over a few times the spark plugs are wet with gas)
I put my thumb over the the cylinders and there seems to be lots of compression.
load test of battery shows 12.30 volts.

What Now?

thats wut im afraid of

yah i was wondering that myself timmyboy, i am gonna go buy a compression tester today and try that

Compression Test Results

i did a compression test and got 118 psi on the rear cylinder and 120 on the front cylinder..this is acceptable right?

still need help....Karl Please read!!!!!

ok so compression is fine, there is spark and gas. sometimes the seadoo will start right up with no problems, other times it will just crank and crank until u kill the battery lol. Sometimes is goes beep beep, sometimes it doesn't, it will start without it beeping and it will start with it beeping. I think the intermediate beeping is just a lose connection to the beeper or the beeper itself is on its way out the door.

Anyone have any thoughts?

Carb rebuild kit

can anyone tell me what size my carb is? I have the rotax 717, 1997 seadoo gs, need to know what carb kit to buy. Also how big of a job is it to rebuild the carb? How long would it take for a shop to do it? I know a guy who charges $47 an hour is way better then the $80 an hour the dealer here charges so i may juss get him to rebuild it if it is only a 1 or 2 hour job.

where to buy for a good price

hey thanks timmyboy, u know any good online places to buy carb kits at a good price, keeping in mind i live in canada.

how much labour involved??

hey timmyboy how much labour does it normally take to rebuild a carb? like how many hours would a shop generally charge to do it?

Regarding the 2xbeep thing I recently ordered a new key. If the key gets old or the metal doesn't make good contact anymore you may or may not have the 2x beeps. My boat is the same way and it starts with and without the 2x beeps all the time.

/agreed.

My beeps like to come and go as they please, but the boat always starts.

working great now

hey turns out the beeper itself was no good, and the starting issue was the starter, it was drawing to much amperage, when cranking the motor over the battery voltage would drop to 8 volts, no matter what battery we tried, we tried 2 known good batteries both dropped to 8, then replaced the starter and now it drops to 10.4 which is normal. It starts everytime now with no hestitation at all. Also the mechanic put in a new fuel baffle so the gauge works now and fixed an oil leak. The seadoo is runnning great now can't wait till next weekend (may long weekend) gonna get out on it for the first time this season :)
