I have an issue with our 97 SeaDoo Challenger with an issue with the Throttle Steering Mechanism. I had the Yamaha LS Jet Boat and never had the steering throttle control, and I was good at steering with both engines.

The issue I'm having with our Challenger is when I steer Starboard it works, when I turn Port in doesn't. Plus the left engine seems to be now holding at 4000 rpm, in water, 7000 rpm on trailer. It feels like the steering / throttle mechanism is causing this issue.

Big question, is can I remove the entire system? As always THANK YOU!

Hi

The starring throttle assist is just 2 cables run off the stearring box in the compartment in front of the stearing wheel. These can be adjusted by turning the end of the cable where it attaches to the the starring. This adjusts like the breaks on a bycicle. Any way it sounds like one side is too tight and the other is too loose

Good evening, Thank You for the advice. I checked out the one side and it is loose, but moves. It doesn't seem to have the same tension as the working side when it goes back to the normal position. Is there a spring at the carbs that keeps that tension? Thought I would ask before taking the air boxes off which is a chore in these.

If I remember correctly I think there are springs somewhere. I think on the steering side. I don't have this boat anymore so I can't check. But the cables are supposed to be slack when in the center. When you turn the wheel it pulls one tight and gives that engine a little more gas. Feel free to experiment I don't think there is much that can go wrong. Do you have a threaded part on the end of the cable where it connects to the steering? Turning it out (making the cable cover long) makes the cable tighter an hence gives move gas in that direction. It takes a bit to get it so it doesn't give too much at the wrong time but still makes a difference.

On yours it just sounds like it needs adjusting

UPDATE: After a LOT of headaches, I found out a few things on the boat. One the steering / throttle control is designed to work at low speeds and I have to adjust (As suggested) this weekend. The reason I was stuck at 4000 RPM was a fouled plug!!! The previous owner has left WAY TOO MUCH oil in the (Pre Mixed) Gas Tank, and it took only 20 mins to foul the plug! Soaked in oil, so replaced them and the boat runs at 58MPH......with both engines at 7000 RPM.....

Do you have the oil system blocked off? Maybe he was premixing and had oil being injected?
