I own a 1997 seadoo challenger and I am pretty sure after many tests that the internal cdi has failed. Is there a fix for this instead of replacing the mpem ??? Can I wire up an external dc cdi from a 1996 somehow ? I am exploring all options even buying a replacement mpem for a 1996 or 1997 challenger single engine 787 please help
Thanks Dave

You can run your boat using one of several options, all of them originally designed to run the 787 in ski's so you're going to lose the neutral safety ability and some gauge functions depending on which way you choose to go.

My favorite mod is the MSD 4255 enhancer, it does essentially anything the other ski MPEM conversions will do for you but it eliminates the DESS security so any lanyard used on the post will act solely as a kill switch. Your start button becomes a one function momentary start switch and the lanyard is used as the kill switch. The other feature I like about is you can program an rmp limp mode to work in conjunction with the temp alarm sensor.

I can draw out the wiring diagram for you, walk or talk you through it if need be it's not to hard to do.

That aside it's about a $350 cost to repair it, so what all have you done to determine your MPEM has actually failed? Have you tested the trigger, rectifier, wiring etc. By chance are you blowing the 5 amp MPEM power supply fuse? -If so that can be repaired most of the time.

There are no fuses blowing and the rest of the boat functions work properly I took the mpem out of my 1996 and hooked it up along with the external dc cdi and the functions normally and runs fine there is nothing wrong with anything but the 1997 mpem internal cdi has failed I want everything to function as intended so I will not be happy with eliminating anything.... That being said I have a spare external dc cdi and was wondering if I can some how slice into the 1997 mpem and wire it up to have a working cdi unit again ? Or I will simply replace the mpem with another used one
So I know that everything works properly except the cdi because I had the boat on the water yesterday and everything function properly as I stated above but when I put the 1997 original mpem back in the only thing not working is the internal cdi is not creating a spark

I hope this is understandable ??

It is understandable, if everything on your original MPEM is working except the internal digital CDI the MSD module should be able to piggyback it and work just fine.

I'll have to look at the wiring diagrams from MSD and I can draw that out for you.

What about an mpem from a 1996 sportster 717 would that work, Manufacturer Part Number:
278-000-790 and if not please explain why so understand is it a timing issue?

Nvm I found the answer to my own question it's no lol

So now you understand the differences between the 717 and it's ignition system generator versus the digital CDI that's integrated into your MPEM for the 787 that uses the simple trigger coil?

That's why I encouraged you to look at the MSD 4255, it's the only thing available that will solve the issue you have now and allow you to keep the existing MPEM. You can wire that to piggyback your MPEM that is still working aside from it's defective CDI and should the MPEM ever fail completely the MSD module will run the boat with a few changes to the wiring.
