hey, I just bought a 1997 challenger 1800 over the winter. I think the mepm is bad on it. what are some signs that it is for sure bad? if it is bad will it not allow the motor to get spark?

Hi and welcome to the SeaDoo forum. It could be the MPEM, but there are other things to check first.

Was the boat running when you purchased it? If so were both motors running? Is one motor starting but not the other?

Moving this thread to the 2-stroke boat forum.

When I put power to the boat and I have the lanyard on the post it will just beep one after another beep beep beep, not the short beeps either. Other times when I put power to it only one motor will fire unless I switch out the wire going to each solenoid for each motor, but both motors will not fire at the same time.

Well, the good news is it's not the MPEM. It sounds like at least part of your problem is a bad solenoid. Try shorting across the main terminals of the motor that is not starting, if the motor turns over replace the solenoid.

The motor that's not starting, is it always the same motor? And for future reference, which motor is not starting. Refresh my memory, does your boat have one or two batteries?

Sounds like your mpem is communicating with your lanyard key intermittently. Almost like you have a loose or bad wire on the wiring harness, or maybe a bad dess post.

Ok When the lanyard key is installed we get a constant beeping. We can play with the key and get the beeping to stop but then the starboard( right) motor will crank constantly until we disconnect power or times out. Also there is no spark during this event. We cannot Get the left motor to spin at all unless we swap the output from the mpem to the solenoid yellow and black wires. We can hear a click in the mpem this must be the output to the solenoid. This boat will act different each to we connect power.

why does the motor keep trying to fire even when I do not press the start button?

And if the dess post is bad will it not allow the motors to have spark?

Because it may be causing and intermittent connection to the MPEM. You know on this forum all we really have is words, without actually being there all we can really do is make and educated guess. Yes it could be other things, and yes it could even be the MPEM, you really don't want to know how much these things cost, especially for your boat.

Anyway if it were my boat that's where I would start, you should be able to get one pretty reasonably from Nick Minnetonka4me or Jess 99spxxx. If that doesn't fix it the next step would be to check the wiring. Sorry I can't offer a guarantee that this will fix your problem.

Yeah I dont know if you called me last week there has been a bunch of guys looking this season.

My brother sold his last one a few weeks ago for $1800...that is how rare finding a good one with a warranty is.

I also build conversion kits for considerably less. If you are interested let me know. Only downfall is the neutral safety switch is disabled, The low fuel warning system is disabled, and we have to add a 2nd DESS post and key to the dash.

Where in Wisconsin are you? Did you just buy it?

I'm pretty sure that guy called me after he bought it in an auction. Hopefully he left some money on the table to fix it.

I'm on the westside of Minneapolis so you probably don't want to bring it up, but if you do I can install the conversion if you aren't up to it.

I actually got it down in Illinois.

if I were to just buy the conversion does it come with everthing I should need?

would the neutral safty switch do this if it where bad and think the boat was in forward or reverse position?
you can fix this just get a light tester and start buy seeing what wires are dead
check fuses
I got everything working on my 1995 speedster all I needed was a wireing diagram and started probing wires till I found all the problems
had both tacks not working-no fuel gage-no blower------all working now
all I used was a bulb tester
a buddy of mine had a ski that when he hit the start button it would just keep trying to start and not quit--- turned out to be cylinoid bad he had to disconnect the battery cable for it to stop the starter

I do not think it is the neutral safety because it will recognize if it is in forward or reverse and make a different beeping noise.

on my manual for the 1995 speedster it says continuous beeps means temp sensor grounded or the wire is grounded out on something have you checked them?

Hey guys I just wanted to update this thread...

He sent me his MPEM and it was all sorts of screwed up. Weird tones, beeps, Relays buzzing, programmer would not connect.

Conner bought my conversion kit and didnt even call once for support. PLUG. AND. PLAY! (...well almost, two holes need to be drilled) He's up and running!!!
