1997 GTX Water Ingestion

Hello to all! I am new to this forum but not new to Sea Doos, having owned and maintained a 1997 GSX and GSX since they were new. Both have been meticulously maintained and are in excellent condition. I recently replaced the wear rings, rebuilt the pumps, and replaced the carbon rings in both and had both out for first test ride last weekend. The GSX runs great, with no issues but the GTX is giving me trouble….

GTX ran fine on the hose (yes, proper procedure!) after I completed the above work. Started with no issues at the ramp and idled to the beach as normal. Took it out for test ride, idling perfectly normal to get past the buoy line. Hit the gas and it accelerated smooth and strong as expected with a fresh pump. Beautiful! It ran well for about two minutes before it started sputtering, lost power, and would not rev much more than 4,000 rpm. The GTX has been troubled by an intermittent electrical issue which I have yet to diagnose so I assumed that was what was going on and managed to limp it back to the beach. I had some more fun on the GSX and then when it was time to go home had no problem starting the GTX and getting it on the trailer. The next day I attempted to flush and diagnose electrical only to be greeted by a hydro-locked engine before turning the hose water on! I managed to clear the water and get it started, fogged, etc. Short of a bad O-ring or gasket somewhere I cannot think of anything that could cause water ingestion during normal riding. More background… the engine is factory original with approximately 175 hours on it and up until now it has not given one bit of trouble. With water cleared compression checks out at 120 psi in both cylinders.

Any thoughts you folks may have as to what could have caused the water ingestion are appreciated! Apologies for the lengthy post. - Mike

I would say your exhaust gaskets could be leaking like the manifold gasket that bolts to the jugs would be my guess

Stevie96xp,
Thank you for the response! I got it started on the hose this morning. It fired right up and I could see water seeping from the manifold gaskets just as you suggested. Once the engine warmed a bit the external leak stopped but no telling what’s going on inside without taking it apart. Gonna’ get after it! Mike

O yeah man sounds like that’s it. Good luck

Stevie96xp, thanks again for the advice. Gaskets are replaced and ski fired right up with no leaks on hose. Have not had a chance to get back on water yet and now a day later the intermittent electrical issue came back. It's completely dead as if the battery has been disconnected. I'll start a new thread with details on that problem. - Mike
