Just bought a 1997 GTX (5642G)
Engine sized after only 2 days, about 4 hours riding.
If I order an SBT premium engine, they recommend not using the oil pump, but use a premix. What is the correct Ratio??
I like the Idea of not having to premix oil/fuel, but I don't want to have another engine lock up.
Which way is really the best?? Should I do what SBT recommends? If I remove the pump and install the blocking plate,
should I remove the tank and all associated hoses?

Thanks
Gary

Tank on!.........

The reason SBT recommends the block off plate is because even though you have an oil pump and you see that it works, chances are, with age, the pump is not putting out the volume that it's suppose to put out.

In the manual, there is a test for checking the volume your pump is discharging. If it's not up to par, you either put a rebuild kit in it or replace it.

When you first get the new motor, you should get one quart of break in oil with it. I believe SBT wants you to run their new motor with a ratio of 32:1 on the first tank. There after, you should run a 40 or 50:1. I think I"d run the 40:1 for a couple tanks, check the plugs, if they look a little blackened, then I'd go ahead to 50:1..........

Here is a premix calculator. You can follow the link and answer the questions. It'll ask how many gallons of gas, then it'll ask you the number on the ratio.......

You can also go to a boat shop like West Marine and buy a premix measuring cup. It's got the ounces to gallons of gas for just about every fuel/oil ratio there is, even your weed eater.

You asked about your oil tank. It has got to be left in place, even if you go oil premix. Because the oil lines that go to the rotary valve have to be lubricated or you'll burn it up.

I have the same ski and No oil tank. All I did was loop the oil line to the other side and fill it full of oil. Every now and then I check it to make sure its full. I just wanted to free up some clutter in the hull and pulled the oil tank out. I run a 40:1 ratio

Thanks for your info. If I decide to keep the pump system, (using all new parts of course) is there a way of telling that the pump system is failing before it lunches the engine? When the engine starts to slow down due to sizing, its usually to late.

I pulled everything out of my gsx and took off about 5 lbs. lighter is faster, if you pull the tank hook the sensor wires together so the light stays off
