1997 GTi Power Issues

I have a 1997 GTi that has been sitting for a little of 2 years. I just replaced the battery and sparkplugs before firing it up. The gas tank was about half full of 2 year old fuel. This weekend I took it out to the lake after topping off the fuel with fresh 87 octane. It ran fine all day Saturday and on Sunday I added another 6 gallons of fresh gas. I took it out on the lake and hit some pretty large waves, shortly after that it started pulsating at full throttle. It seemed like it would never get to full power. I took it back to the beach and removed the inline fuel filter; there was some debris in the bottom of the filter which I cleaned out. My guess is that the waves stirred up debris in the fuel tank causing it to get in the carburetor somehow. I plan on taking the carb off this weekend and giving it a thorough cleaning. I just wanted to see if anyone else had any ideas.

I went through all the same thing

1.) replace gray fuel lines
2.) clean out carb filter.
3.) clean out tank
4.) adjust low speed screw in 1/8 turn.

I got mine back!

Carb Filter

Wow... that filter was 90% clogged. I don’t see how it was even running. Thanks for the help. I Just saved a bunch of money by doing it myself.

It is amazing how gunked up those filter get. Glad that our fellow members were able to help each other out and save a ton of money.

Similar issue

I bought 2 1997 GTIs, and I used them on Thursday with no issues, I took them out on the lake again today and one of them started pulsating at full speed, after a while, you cannot get it to full speed, press the accelerator and it idles up to a point and then it drops and stays low. Can this be the same issue with dirty fuel lines?
I also started getting the oil lamp indicator on, but the tank has brand new oil and is full. When I got home and flushed it, the oil lamp was off.

Cleaning the carb filter is what did it for me

Since i was already in it i went ahead and replaced all the fuel line. I purchased 18 feet of the regular black 1/4inch hose at Oriley (89 Cents per ft). Had about 1 foot left over...
