1997 challenger hull leak, unsure how to proceed

Hello, my 1997 sea doo challenger has a significant leak around the "coolant inlet" port on the jet pump. I can see water trickling in around the plastic pipe the coolant hose connects to. There is quite a bit of silcone or caulking around that port, from the inside it looks if the silicone has started to separate from the fiberglass around the hole. Do I need to remove the whole pump assembly to correct this issue or is there a simpler fix? I attached a picture I found on the net, I circled where mine is leaking. It appears they may have a had a similar issue and corrected it by sealing around the entire pump with black "stuff"? What type of sealant would be best to use if going this route? Thank you, any help is appreciated. Untitled.jpg

I seriously doubt that you can solve this without pulling the assembly. If you don't pull it, you will NEVER get the sealant to where it really needs to be. Which is sandwiched between the hull and the assembly...

ok is there anything else worth doing in there since i am going to have the whole unit apart? My wear ring doesnt look beat up and the impeller seems to be in good shape. Also, i assume i will need a splined shaft to line everything up? thanks!

If evening is good to go I would drop the pump out, but a neoprene seal for the hull to pump. You only need a little silicone around the ports. Someone has enough to choke a few horses. Perhaps someone can get you the neo seal part number. I'm on the road doing an install of a machine and don't have quick access.

No worries, I am sure I will be able to find the PN for the neoprene seal. How big of a job? I am relatively mechanically inclined but have almost 0 experience with jet prop systems, so I feel a bit overwhelmed. Is it as simple as disconnecting linkages then removing the 4 larger bolts and the skid shoe, replace seal/silicone, reinstall? thanks again :)

If you have not changed your pump oil lately you may want to do that too. Also check your wear ring while you are in there.

good idea about the oil! and will check the wear ring as well. thanks! What kind of sealant would be best to use around the port? Also, I assume you dont need to apply any sealant around the neoprene seal?

Clean the pump mount hull side. Peel the double sided tape of the neo, apply to hull. Use permatex ultra black around the pump fittings that enter the hull. Torque pump to required rating. No sealant on the inside.

Sorry I didn't mention the ring or oil, it's just something I check when I have the pump of anyway.
