I'm a first time owner and just put my '96 XP in the water yesterday. Ran fine the first time. Second run was fine. But then when I attempted to go out a third time, it had trouble accelerating, sounded as if it was bogging down. It kind of sounded like when a car doesn't change gears when it's supposed to. I had been doing some reading of common problems with this model before I even got it out and had read something about someone having a similar problem, but it appeared to run better on the reserve tank. I tried this and it did run better. What could be the problem?

Thanks.

well you need to swap out all of your old grey fuel lines for one. they come apart fron the inside out and clog everything up. your fuel selector is clogged up. also you should pull your carbs and clean out the filters that are inside the carbs. each carb has one small screen filter. clean these up and your back up running again.

Thanks. The gray lines were already switched out by the previous owner, that is something he told me was common with these when I bought it. I will try cleaning the filters, hopefully that should work. Also, where could I get a new speedometer for this model? It appears as if it has water damage, it doesn't work at all. Another thing he pointed out to me though, no big deal.

One of two directions.....

If the ski is revving up and not moving you probably sucked some weeds or garbage into the pump. If it wont rev up you could have a fuel problem such as, dirty carbs or fuel selector valve.

It revs up and still moves, it just reaches a point where something appears to clog up and it jerks and sounds like crap.

Gauge

ok as far as the speedometer goes you may not be getting power to the gauge if you unplug the speedometer with the dess key out hit the start botton once or twice and check the reading between the black and purple it sould be around 10 to 12 volts just enought power to work it. if you get no power to the gauge you may want to look into getting a new trim gauge does your trim gauge still work?

It's not that it's getting any power, it's pretty visible water damage. And yes, the rest of the gauges work (trim, fuel, and such).

Try this

 ok i had that same problem you can always remove the gauge and take it apart and clean it out. Just becareful not to damage the plactic cover or to troubleshoot take the purple and black wires unplug them where they plug in to the trim gauge and plug them in to the speedometer and hit the start botton without the dess key and walk to the back of the ski and spin the little cogg wheel and see if the gauge moves if it does the gauge is good if not you may need to replace. if it works take a splice and attach the power from the trim gauge and lead it to the speedometer but also connect the power into the trim gauge thats what i did and it seems to work pretty well. And i didn't need to spend 183 bucks on a new gauge! Hope it helps if you need anything just drop me a line here or send a Personal message. Good Luck!

thanks for all the help...I started it up again this weekend and it ran fine. I'm going to try and run out the rest of the old gas that was in it when I got it and run ethanol free from now on. I'll probably still clean it out just to be on the safe side.
