1996 Sportster what is this small box w/ 2 wires

What is this? Only two wires to it. Wiring appears to go to the gas tank.

Seems logical, but I could not find this device in the 1996 Sportster shop manual and didn't note it in parts microfiche. But it looks factory wired..

Questions:
1. Is it possible to wire in an aftermarket float switch?
2. Should I just buy a new automatic bilge?
