I removed the old driveshaft and splines don't look too bad but it is slipping at flywheel, is the problem the flywheel or the shaft? If it is the flywheel how do I remove it with out screwing things up?

Replace the PTO ,shaft, carbon seal ,rebuild pump, got to pull mag cover, need to buy seadoo tools, big expense.

I am assuming that when you say flywheel, you mean PTO which is what your driveshaft slides into.

The proper way is to remove the mag cover and with a 30mm (I think) socket hold the nut that is on the flywheel, then with the impeller tool, crack the PTO loose.

Another way To remove the flywheel, bring you cylinder to TDC and drop it back slightly. Put about 12" of rope in the spark plug hole. To get the flywheel (PTO) off you can use a chain wrench or get the impeller tool ($15), as you start to loosen the PTO the piston will compress into the rope and hold the motor in place so you can crack it loose.

I would inspect both the shaft and PTO but if they where slipping I am gonna guess they will both need to be replaced.

I think the nut will just loosen, using that method, if the pto is on there tight , I would not use rope, might push crank out of alignment, considering it is just pressed together.

I just did this job , last week, it is not fun, get board to lay on.

I might try the rope, but if it is on there tight I would stop, most all the PTO s I have taken off, I used an acetylene torch to heat, but do not do that unless it is going to be rebuilt.

Those things get STUCK on, 3 foot pipe to breaker bar, with BRP tool holding flywheel.

Are you sure the pto is bad?.....what do you mean it's slipping?.....just when your trying to take off?....is it fine after you plain out?....meaning you have power after that...might just have a bad cavitation issue...need to check motor and see if its down tight...motor mount could of broke and motor moved back... Or you could be sucking air through your carbon seal...if your splines striped out in your pto you should be able to see evidence in your pto boot...

I am going to try replacing the shaft I hope this works. The old shaft looks a little rounded at the pto end but not too bad the shaft is very loose when I put it in and I can spin it by hand.

Im not sure the PTO is bad but the shaft does not turn in the water and I hear a grinding noise. The PTO does turn. I am going to try a new (used) shaft and see if that works first.

I bet that if you post a pic of the end of the shaft, one of the experts here can tell you if it is bad or not... instead of hoping that a new shaft fixes the problem.
A pic of the PTO where the shaft inserts would likely also be useful.

better safe than sorry

Of course the PTO is going to turn because the engine is running and its bolted to the engine...

probably will be smart to just buy the PTO when you buy the shaft and the "shaft rebuild kit"... I have a sportster and the splines on my shaft were "boogered" up and I was DIW... luckily 100 feet from the ramp... I figure if it was slipping like that the splines on the PTO were getting abused as well... i took the PTO off and they were marginal... better be safe and splurge a little extra than not and have to buy another shaft...

you will hardly be able to see the damage inside the PTO. the splines on the shaft will be triangulated to one side or clear sheared off.
OSD has the tools on a rental basis to do this job , should just order the parts from him as well.
