1996 Speedster jet pump cone worn down

A few months ago when winterizing my 1996 Speedster, I noticed this when changing the jet pump oil. The starboard side jet pump cone is worn down on the inside. You can clearly see it in the pic (left is starboard side cone, right is port side cone). The fluid that drained out didn't look abnormal or anything. My concern is that the jet pump could be going bad? What should I look at before putting the boat in the water this coming summer?

I would make sure that there is no play in and out, it looks like the impeller is moving along the driveshaft axis.

I will have to check that once the boat is out of storage. What would cause the impeller to move along the driveshaft like that?
