Hey all just found a 1996 Seadoo GTS for $1200.00 he says it has 100 hours on a 580? Engine that was put in. anything I should be checking this unit for? It looks like it was a mature owner that had it and it was not abused. I'm a total nuwb to skis the wife and I just want one for a play toy on the water.

Here is the add:

that would be a 587, they're reliable as an anvil so long as they've been taken care of. it won't be very fast, but will get you there. most all skis will need the general fuel system maintenance and carb cleaning, for canda i guess 1200 is an OK price, but i'd try to get him down closer to 800 if i were you, its a buy at a grand.

So seaching the threads I want the following:

150-130 compression
check wear ring
look for cracks

Any other tips on what to check will be great. Dont want to get stuck with a lemon LOL

Ya im going to take $1000.00 cash with me tonight. If it checks out. Wish it had a trailer but I guess I can find a used one.

Personally I would keep looking, 130 compression on the PTO cylinder is not good plus the difference in compression. You're looking at an engine rebuild soon. I'd offer 400-500 tops.

if it has grey fuel lines thats another bargaining chip, and you can probably be fairly certain you won't be playing with your new toy much this season. also if the compression is below 140, it'll need a rebuild "soon", so factor that into your price. on any ski, no matter how nice it looks, build the expense of bringing maintenance up to date into your calculation, and expect to spend a minimum of a couple hundred bucks to do so if you DIY.

Grey fuel lines? Were they faulty? I will take my compression tester with me.

Im just looking for one that we can rip around on 40mph is more than fast enough for me lol. Im to old to bounce at 60mph across the water.

Djm2u you never too old for that, dad was doing 45mph on the ski sunday and wished it had more power he is 49 by the way.
