At around 5500 RPM, the engine surges like it is not getting enough fuel. Below 5500 it runs fine. Put new plugs in and used carbuerator cleaner, but no change. Will try cleaning fuel filter next. Any similar situations out there?

Check the fuel selector valve - remove and blow out with compressed air.

And I just ran across a problem with a 96 GSX project - the o-ring in the fuel filter was missing. It was not only leaking when sitting, but also sucking in air at revs.
