1996 GTX - Won't Idle

Hi,

I was given a 1996 GTX in pieces. The heads were off, the cyliners were out of the heads, and the carbs and exhaust were off. I put it back together with new gaskets and o-rings and much to my surprise, it runs. Compression is 155. It was given to me by my brother and he was told by a dealer it needed a new engine. That was over a year ago and no one knows what the original problem was.

My problem is that it stalls when I try to idle. It also starts hard, I have to apply choke and throttle and it will start and run at slightly higher than idle if I keep my hand on the throttle. Seems to run well from low to high throttle, it just won't idle (stalls every time I take my hand off the throttle). I'm running it on a garden hose.

When I put it back together, I replaced the fuel lines and put new gas in as I saw suggested here. The only thing I found wrong when putting it back together is that the slide gates in the Rave system were full of black, gooy, tar. I doubt they could have moved. I disassembled them and cleaned all the parts up and put them back together.

I'm thinking I may have a rotary valve issue since it is difficult to start. Can anyone suggest other things for me to check out before I take the valve apart? Could it be as simple as an idle adjustment? The carbs were off the engine when I got it, but they were fully assembled. Even the cables and fuel lines were still attached. I just put new gaskets on, changed the fuel lines and bolted the carbs back up.

Thanks again,

Dwight

You could try the idle screw, but If I were you I would clean/rebuild the carbs. Save you some $$ down the road. I am learning the hard way.

96 GTX - Carb Model

Thanks. Do you know how to identify the carb model/type? The manual references more than one model of carb and when I find the rebuild kits at sba they list several types. I don't see a model on the carbs themselves.

Thanks,

Dwight

I have a GTX but mine is a 97. I ordered the carb rebuild kit and the company I ordered it through has something other than the book says. But the vendor has the right part because based on the parts on the kit actually look like what I have right now. Here is what mine requires but here is what the "book" says I need.

Do some homework before you buy.

I'm embarassed to say I found a link to the carb information right here on this site, and they sell the kits :stupid:. Though I have not figured out how to place a purchase. So I emailed them.
