Hi, everyone. This appears to be the best forum out there.

I was recently given a 96 GSX sea doo. I tried to start it and all I hear is the starter clicking (fairly loud) but will not kick over. I opened the rear electrical box and noticed the compete 7.5amp fuse along with it's wiring harness absolutley fried - the 15amp fuse is perfect.

So I purchased a new complete harness and noticed upon reconnecting battery (which is brand new) that I smelt a blown fuse, sure enough that 7.5 amp fuse had blown.

I cannot turn the PTO by hand - I took apart the cylinder head and did notice a small amount of rust build up on both cylinders and it cleaned up fairly good.

Can anyone offer some trade secrets on getting it to turn over. My concern is that its seized and I'd either need to install a whole new top end or new engine.

Thanks
Carl

Shoot a ton of PB blaster, WD-40 or Marvel Mystery Oil into the cylinders and let it soak.

Get a big pipe wrench to bear down on the PTO to break the engine loose. If that much beatin' doesn't do it, you are looking at a top end at a minimum.

The pipewrench on the PTO will be a great test - now how about the blown fuse issue? When ever I connect battery that rear electrical box 7.5 amp fuse blows, any suggesstions? Thanks

Some 25 yrs ago

I pulled a 6 hp Johnston out of a pond. It had been there a while. IT would not turn over.

I soaked it a while, with some kind of solvent in the spark plug holes.

Still no turn over.

I wound up pulling the head, and using a large block of wood, and a large hammer, and slowly beating the pistons loose. I finally got it running!

Make sure the wood is the same size and shape as the pistons, and figure this is a creature of last resort. Bump one piston, then the other. For one to move, the other has too also.

If you are lucky, you can get it.

I got this one back, without a rebuild! :hurray::hurray:

For what it is worth...

Nate

the 7.5 is the vts fuse. vts is one form or another of fried. probably module in the housing. unplug it. worry about it later. now to the real issue. froze. pull the pump. it could be what is frozen. if motor is still stuck, remove the motor. before you start beating on the pistons, get the flywheel off the front. it could be rusted to the stator. pull the carbs and rotary valve. stuff in there won't sieze the motor, but if something is in there and you force it, you will damage the RV face, valve and maybe break the gear on the RV shaft. this ski has been resting for a long time. you need to check and/or service these things before you drive it away from the dock anyway.

Guys, Like I said this forum is by far the best. I will try all things recommended and let you kow how I made out. You're right it has been sitting for a long, long time and the VTS does look corroded.

So you're thinking to check out the pump? The black rubber boot that goes over PTO shaft has a special looking clamp, not your regular hose clamp, is there a special way to remove this, can I use a regular hose clamp?

Thanks guys

It's probably an Oetiker clamp - one that is crimped on by the factory. It would need to be cut off to remove the boot (unless you cut the boot:ack:). Find the crimper piece and cut that off - don't try to cut at the strap unless you know you are going to replace the boot. Cutting at the strap usually destroys whatever is under it - the boot in this case.

Then you could reinstall the boot later with a regular hose clamp.

well yeah I would think you are noticing that your VTS isnt working right? I've had a ton of problems with my VTS on my 96 GSX and I have learned a lot about the darn thing if you have any other questions.
