1996 GSX Issues

2 Questions...

First how long can I run a 1996 GSX out of the water with the hose hooked up to the back, by the jet.

Second, the ski stopped running the other day I looked at the spark plugs they were charred black (they are only 2 week old spark plugs, I also gapped them correctly). What could cause them to char black at the tips? Other info I put clean spark plugs in and it fired up, so I think it stopped running because it was charred black on the top.

Oh one more question, my fuel gauge always reads Low Fuel. Is there a way to get this to read correctly?

as long as that hose is running water into your ski, you can run it all day long (just don't gas it much). Make sure the water is turned on before starting the ski and it's turned off before the ski.

Make sure it's saying you have low fuel and not low oil, if it's actually low on oil, that could be the reason your plugs look the way they do.

Thanks for the replies, I will check to make sure it says low fuel tonight instead of of low oil however im pretty sure its says fuel.

I quoted the above because I thought you were suppose to start the engine before the water and turn off the water before turning off the ski. Basically what i thought was the water should never be running when the ski isnt because you could flood the engine. Just wanted some verification, thanks.

you are correct. start the ski and then turn on the water...when finished, turn off the water, then turn off the ski. Reversing this will cause the water to backup into the engine. Glad you caught that cause as I was reading his post I was gonna post the correction.
 
rumble...dont run on hose for more than 5minutes. The bearings in pump housing are cooled off while in the water, but not cooled on the hose...
 
I only ran it for a couple of minutes last night(with the hose) I just wanted to see if my plugs were turning black again.

I have had 2 people tell me to do different things to fix my spark plugs turning black. The thought being the fuel is to rich in the engine.


First was to use hotter plugs, the thought being here to burn stuff faster. Im not sure I should do this it just sounds like a bad idea.

Second was to adjust the high speed screw. Im uncomfortable doing this as the shop manual is very vague. Any direction?

Also is says low fuel and not low oil (i checked last night) but then I found about that whole magnet baffle issue and I think I can fix that.
 
So I got a tip to do a compression test. I did it, each cylinder 3 times here are the results..

Front - 100 100 100
Rear - 155 155 155

So i know its bad, but what does it mean? Easy fix, expensive? Need more information?
 
set your carbs to these settings....1996 GTX 787 BN-40I (SB) MAIN-142.5 PILOT-70 1.5n/s 23 - 43psi LOW- 1 HIGH- 0....100psi in cylinder, ummprobably get away with hone and new piston along with topend gasket kit....
 
with putting out 100psi, maybe set of rings all you need, depend'n on the condition of piston, and a hone, if the walls of cylinder seem slight scratch...other thing mentioned is for carb settings..
LSA=1, HSA=0...
 
Ok this is going to sound crazy but just hear me out.

I have figured out the the Spark Plugs being charred black is because im burning reburnt fuel in the cylinder because of the weak compression.

The person who gave me the seadoo is convinced that all I need to do is use hotter plugs to burn off the excess carbon. I don't believe this is a good idea but im not mechanically inclinded enough to give him a firm enough answer why I should not do this. So could one of you put this in terms so I can explain to him why this is a bad idea? And how much extra damage would this cause if the seadoo was run in this condition with hotter plugs.
