Hi all, I said this day is coming and here it is (please be patient, I'm no expert but I've done my best to learn/investigate before bothering anyone).

Here's what I know:

- No gauges worked last year when I bought machine. I replaced new VTS and Tach gauge because they were cracked and ruined but Multigauge seemed in decent shape so I left it. Still, of course, none worked. Multigauge warning lights ;have power (see Picture1).

- VTS wiring was completely cut at the VTS box and removed by previous owner. I installed the "Trim Fix" a couple of weeks ago and it works great and the gauge works (kludgy but does what I need) which tells me it's getting power from the factory wiring because as far as I can tell, only positional signal wires are hooked up to it from the new kit so it must be getting power from somewhere.

- Whatever connector that goes to the top of the magneto is missing (see Picture2).

- There's a white wire connected to the magneto housing that's been snipped (also see Picture2).

- Perplexingly, there's also a white wire snipped from the harness that goes to the safety switch but the safety switch works fine (see Picture3). For what it's worth, there isn't a single white wire shown that I can find in the wiring diagram in the service manual. unless I'm blind

- Harness to beeper has been disconnected and is gone and I have no idea where the beeper is mounted so it's likely they just took the whole thing out and discarded,

- There seems to have been some past splicing, or maybe not because it looks factory on the wires coming out of the tach/multigauge gauges. Picture attached. This originally had white wiring sheathing like from Nomex home wiring (or larger actually) and electrical tape keeping it in place. It looks so factory though (sealed rubber protecting the splices) but how else could the past owner have put the white sheathing around it if there wasn't some splicing in the past? See Picture4 - again - I removed the white sheathing and tape.before pic.

I'd like to get my tach and multigauge working (and get a new beeper or locate existing. One of the problems I have is a lot of the wires all just disappear into mystery land in the MPEM in the wiring diagram, which makes it hard to know what's related to what.

Right now I'm starting with the tach gauge. I'm guessing it has power since the VTS gauge does and the three gauges are connected in series for power and the wire hardness are all in place for this. but I have no idea because it's (again) not working So, can I just run a wire with a 20k resistor and splice into the yellow/black wire to the magneto? Is there a better way?

Also, what is the missing connector and snipped white wire on the magneto housing?

Obviously someone was having problems with blown fuses and they just disconnected everything they could to fix it. Now that I have good gauges (hopefully), maybe that all goes away.

Thanks in advance,, sorry for being verbose. I know I'll lose some people but I want to give all the info I know.

You are just asking for trouble with wires and connections like that and your battery cable is worn through.
IF it was mine I would just order a complete wire harness and cables from Nick @ westside power sports. AKA: @Minnetonka4me. You are going to be chasing electrical gremlins with that all summer instead of riding.

When you say "a complete wire harness and cables", exactly what does that entail? New everything in the electrical back (rectifier, MPEM and everything? I mean, that could be a pretty tall order if I'm re-wiring the whole machine including wires into the magneto housing, etc. Please let me know what we're talking about before I think about going that route. Thanks for your help.

Oh and what did you mean my battery cable is worn through? Something you saw in the pics? Looks pretty solid to me.

Thanks,

Minnetonka4me will sell you a complete good and tested used harness that will connect everything and get rid of the splices. You literally plug and play into your boxes and engine.

Yes, in your picture you can see the red insulation worn through exposing the inner corroded battery cable, just above the pink cable.

OK, thanks.

BTW: I got my tach working tonight. Someone hooked up two of the connectors wrong (might have been me - there were loose connectors and I can;t remember what I did when I replaced the gauges last year). I switched them after studying the wiring diagram. And........now the machine won't turn off with either the main switch or the safety switch (10 times scarier). I have to choke it. When I hit the off switch I can hear a kicking sound but it stays running. I'll look into it more tomorrow. I'm wondering if that's why some of the wires were disconnected. Sigh. Gremlins :)

OK, problem solved. I accidentally disconnected the wire from the switch to the coil when wrestling with the electrical box yesterday. All fine now and I have the tach working - one step closer. Only thing not working on the whole ski now is the multi-gauge which I expect will be as much work to solve as everything I;ve done so far combained.

mikidymac: I'm pretty confident in the wiring harness I have, I checked it all out, everything looks good. I re-did those splices to double check and make sure nothing was loose. I think I'm dealing with a past owner who trashed his guages (the VTS and tach gauges were basically smashed) so they disconnected a bunch of stuff.

I'll probably buy a used multigauge and see what that does.

Thanks again.
