8 is enough

I recently aquired a 1995 spx with 657x motor. It has been sitting for a few years, but the price was right (free) and I thought it would be a good project to teach my son a few things. Last weekend we cleaned out inside of hull, removed and cleaned fuel tank, replaced all fuel and cooling lines, and bought and charged new battery. The electronics box was open, so I removed and cleaned all wiring and and put back in. Engine cranks but no spark at either plug. Used ohmeter as stated in repair manual to check coil and mpem. When checking the readings on the mpem, i got nothing on the tan/black wire. What do these wires control. I would hate to spend the money on a new unit if I am not sure this is the problem. Any suggestions?

Also, are there any kits that are available to bypass the mpem?

No you can't bypass the Mpem,(Multi Purpose Electronic Module). I would check the safety lanyard switch.It is normally open. Check the wires on the back of the switch at the connector. Do a continuity on the switch.I bet that is the problem. Keep us posted...were here to help. Do you have a Seadoo service repair manual? Here is an idea.
If you want you could join as a "premium member" As a premium member you can down load a authentic seadoo manual from the seadoo manual library. In the library is a variety of manuals for almost all years and models. You can view as many as you like on line as a PDF file, or download it and print it for your personal and privet use. There are operator manuals and repair manuals for you to do your own repairs on your seadoo. The repair manuals have everything from troubleshooting, repair procedures to winterizing. It contains wire diagrams torque specs and pictures for disassemble and assemble instructions. In the spec sheets it tells everything needed to maintain oil changes, spark plug gaps, carburetor rebuilds and impeller wear ring tolerances. Click on the "Seadoo Manuals" link at the top of the page for more details. If you need any help or get in a jam, we are always here to answer your questions too.

The engine turns over when I press the lanyard switch down. It would not turn over if the switch was bad, would it? I do not have the lanyard, I was just holding the switch down.

You will need a safey lanyard to run the SPX.
Here is the proceedure to the wires and switches, give them a check;
Check the continuity of the Safety Switch Lanyard. It is normally "open". The color code of the 2 wires are Black and Black/Yellow.These feed back into the electrical module box. The Start /Stop switch is normally "open". The color codes of the 2 wires are Black, that goes direct to ground, (to stop the engine), and the Yellow/Red that goes to the electrical module box. Check the continuity of this switch too. Keep us posted on the results.

Thanks, I will check it when I get home. Please explain the lanyard. I need a regular lanyard, correct? Not the DESS? I was under the impression the DESS began in 1996. It does turn over with the start button when I am depressing the safety switch.

Yes, that is correct. The 1995 SPX has a safety lanyard only...it stops when it is pulled off and any lanyard that fits will let it start. The dess( Digital Electronic Security System) is totally different. Each is programed to the Mpem,(Multi Purpose Electronic Module) and are not interchangeable unless programed to it.

Ok, you will have to excuse my ignorance. Safety Lanyard switch has showed continuity when I pressed the button. Also had continuity between the black/ yellow red wires on the starter switch when I pushed the start button. Here is where I am confused. Why would I need the lanyard for a spark if I can get the engine to crank by just pressing in the button? Does the lanyard complete a connection or just hold the button down?

That is what I thought. So I believe that I may need a new mpem, because the engine turns over fine, but getting no spark.

lanyard controls both starter and spark. and you can't jump a dess with your thumb. did you pull the mpem and check the fuses? could be mpem, or the ignition stator. most likely mpem, and easier to change.

The 1995 SPX has a safety lanyard...NO DESS. That year seadoo has a module box not a mpem. You do need a safety lanyard to ride it or your finger gets sore...lol You said the other switch checked out ok? Double check the fuses are ok too. If the switches check ok and the fuses are ok it has to be the module that's bad, as it is sealed and no tests are available to check it.

everyone calls it the MPEM all the way back to 92. so, that isn't the correct term? it is only multi-purpose when it is anti-theft too?
