1995 Speedster won't rev in the water!

Hello all,

I have a '95 speedster that was running fine yesterday for a while. I shut off the engines to float around for a while, and when I went to start them, the starboard engine now barely idles and will not rev at all - it simply dies. I pulled the boat out of the water, and it starts fine. At first, it backfired a couple times, then ran fine out of the water.

This morning, it started OK in the garage, backfired a couple times, but the revved and idled fine out of the water. I put it in the water, and immediately the problem returned - barely runs, won't rev, dies, etc.

I pulled it back out this evening, and yep, the engine runs fine out of the water again!

I checked the impeller and its clear.

I replaced the plugs, checked the MPEG fuse, disconnected and re-connected the MPEG per the mechanics manual, all no use.

Anyone have a clue?

Thanks!

It sounds like you need to remove the carburetors and clean them. If you're careful and don't tear or damage the diaphragms you won't need to buy a rebuild kit. Pay attention to the internal filters too. If you have gray fuel lines you need to replace them with black fuel lines available from auto parts stores like Auto Zone. Measure the length you need and bring a sample with you so you get the correct size. Replace one at a time so you don’t get them mixed up. If you need clamps replace them too. Use small stainless steel clamps also from the auto parts store.

Keep us posted.

I would give it a compression test and if it was good I would check and see if you have gray fuel lines. If so they they should be replaced and carbs need to be at least taken apart and cleaned.

Well, the carbs were cleaned last year...

And it was running just fine yesterday, and it revs fine out of the water, but not in the water, so I'm guessing that the carbs are OK. One strange thing I noticed when I pulled it out today was that when I was trying to start the engine on the ramp, it seemed like it "puked" quite a bit of water before starting, Then it started and ran fine. It seems to me like either the engine somehow senses load when out of the water vs. in the water (they never rev fully out of the water), or perhaps (?) the exhaust system is somehow filling with water thus restricting the power from the engine?

Thanks in advance,

Bruce

Bruce the seadoo has NO load on it out of the water ...it will always run like that. What counts is how it runs in the wear under load. Check the compression to get a good idea of what the engine is doing internally, and also the gray fuel lines if it doesn't clear up.
