1995 speedster fuel baffle question

hello all, I have a 1995 speedster that I recently bought that is having a problem..it starts fine and runs strong for about 20 seconds full speed, then one of the engines dies, followed shortly after with the other engine...If I restart the engines and idle or go slow, they run fine again only at slow speed, if I go full throttle, same thing happens?
I replaced the fuel filters and when I did I disconnected the 4 lines going to the fuel baffle and think I may have put them back in the wrong order...does anyone know how to tell if I have them installed correctly?
Thanks so much in advance!

Welcome to the forum......

If I remember right, the top of your fuel pick up baffle is marked as to what hose goes where. But now, from your description, it sounds like your fuel tank vent is stopped up. If you look at your fuel lines and determine they are right, when you take it out and it does it again, shut off the other engine and loosen the gas cap. If you hear a vacuum, then your vent tube is stopped up.........Welcom to the forum...........

Thanks for the welcome!
Would you happen to know what the hose goes where to the baffle?
I have 2 hoses that I can not see that looks like they come from the fuel tank? and 2 hoses that come from the rear of the engines...one for each engine.
Not sure if that is the return part or ?
The manual that I have is very vague on that and shows a Y adapter for the lines?
I think I need a diagram to figure this out...
Thanks in advance for any help.

How many?....

I'm not really familar with the layout of the speedsters fuel system, but your running the 657cc engines with the Mikuni SBN carbs, so, it may be close to my setup on my 97, just you have twin engines. ...
On the carbs, they are linked to each other with a short piece of tube, then, you'll have one main fuel line coming from the tank that will split off and go to each the mag and the pto carb. Now, heres where I'll get a bit fuzzy, so let me start from the tank....might be easier....
From the tank, you probably have 4 hoses. Two of those hoses are going to the fuel switch up there by the driver for ...OFF, ON, and RESERVE. Then, one of the lines is a return line from the carbs. The last (4th) line is a vent. Now, I'm assuming that your return lines from the two engines are coming together in a "t" before going back to the tank, as is the supply lines. But you do have a "Y" at the end of each fuel line, to each engine, that splits off to your carbs...............

Thanks for the info...looks like I have them correct, but need to clean the internal filters in the carbs...How do I do this? is it something I should take to a shop to do and have the carbs cleaned, etc?
I would love to try it myself, but am afraid it may be a little over my skill level!

Filters....

The hardest part about working on your carbs will be in taking them off. I see your speester is a 95 model, so the level of difficuly is totally based on how hard it will be to pop them off. There is only 2-8mm allen head bolts that secure them. But I've found, on my 97 model challenger, that the aluminum oxide rusting that occurs through electrolysis (it's a white powdery stuff) makes the job task a lot harder. So it all depends in how long it's been since they were last removed.
If you do it, make sure you have an 8mm allen head socket wrench. You can buy them at your local auto parts store. You may as well get a 10mm while your there. Most of the bolts on these are one of those two sizes. I used a regular "L" shaped allen wrench, then, when I was "losing my religion" on how hard it was to break them lose, I went for some PB blaster and saw them. So I snatched them up. Man, they make the job a lot easier with my ratchet. Plus, you have to torque them to put them back on.
The filter is under one of the two caps you'll be taking off.
If it's been a while since there last rebuild, I wouldn't doubt that you find some gumming.....by your description.

Thanks again for your quick help!
As far as pressurizzing the system...how do I do this?
I read that you need to pressurize the system to 5lbs?

It sounds to me as if you are not geting a good fuel flow to carbs. What makes me suspect this is that both engines are shuting down.I dont think carbs are why engines are shuting down. seems kind of unusual for all four carbs to run out fuel at close to the same time and be carb problems. that is why I am thinking fuel line related. Did you crack the wye fiting at the fuel baffle?

Thanks guys for the advice...I took the carb off, cleaned it good, checked and cleaned the little filter (not really that dirty), put it all back.
Runs like new!?
Not really sure what did it???
Learned alot along the way though...

Cool....

That's cool then, we'll consider problem solved!....Robin brings up a good point, which is the reason why I suggested in one of my first replies, to open your fuel cap the next time this happens, to check for a vacuum.....if so, then the vent line may be pinched........Good luck.
With the engines running well, if you need more help, please feel free to open a new post!.........:hurray:
