1995 speedster deck drain issue

Hi,

I have an issue with the drivers side deck drain on my boat and I'm hoping someone can enlighten me.

The issue is it doesn't work properly, if water collects in the boat it just sits there until the water becomes deep enough to reach the centre drain in the locker and then fills te engine bay.

If I try to clean it with the hose pipe or jet wash it flows water while under pressure and continues until it's empty. However once it has finished draining I can immediately put more water in and it will refuse to clear it.

I have tried to take a look at it but the fuel tank is in the way, I have tried to put some wire down to clean it out but I was unable to get it to go in :-(

Is this a one way valve that's sticking ( other than the one on the rear) or does anyone have any ideas how to fix this.

The boat stood collecting leaves and crap outside for years before I bought it so I am expecting a blockage somewhere

many thanks

Andy

There's a hose between the drain and the scupper valve. If it's collecting leaves... that hose is probably plugged up. Take it off, and check it. AND... you may need a new valve on the back of the boat.

My 2001 sportster doesn't drain well while in the water unless underway then it does work but takes awhile. On the trailer it depends on the angle but haven't noticed any drainage issues.

The external scupper valve on the stern keeps water from entering while on the water. Otherwise it's just a straight shot hose from point A to point B and it shouldn't go upward above deck level else it won't drain.

Is it possible to remove the hose without removing the fuel tank?

I do need a new scupper valve as mine has perished and is stuck open, I'm intending to fit the newer ttype with a ball inside hoping this will work and last better.

I have never had the boat in the water so I can't say if it drains while in motion but rain water certainly won't drain away.

I will have another go at trying to get at the pipe so I can take a better look at it.

I have removed the scupper valve too and will try the hose pipe at that end see if I can flush the pipe that way.

Many thanks

Andy

Can someone tell me where to find the scupper valve? I took my boat out for the first time yesterday and after sitting for about 10 minutes, there is at least an inch of water inside the passenger area of the boat. As soon as I drive, the water clears out through the hole. Just woneeding if maybe that valve is stuck open and it's letting water in.

Yes, I do believe there's an upgraded scupper valve available. My boat has the new type I believe from the factory (2001 model) that uses the ball that seals against a silicone grommet/doughnut.

If the bow is oriented too low while on the trailer, You can be sure the scupper system won't drain. But of course if there's debris in the drain or if the hose goes above deck level before exiting the stern then of course this will also interfere.

@minnetonkaforme has offered scupper valves for sale I believe, not sure of other sources off hand (sorry) but they're out there. If you must make new holes for the screws then measure twice drill once, fill old holes using marine-tex white epoxy or polyurethare sealer and seal the new screws using 3M 4200 polyurethane sealer or other semi-permanent polyurethane formula WAL-Mart has one (Don't use 3M 5200 permanent type for this, which really is THE VERY EXTREMELY PERMANENT formula).

Thanks for the advise :-)

Banditgrrr, the drain is on the back assuming yours is the same as mine it's above the jets on the rear right Hand side when looking at the jets. You should see a white ring and in the centre is a flap that is supposed to open to let water out and close to stop it coming in. It is probably blocked and stuck open or like mine and perished sticking open.

I have just ordered the newer design with the ball and cup, cost $14.99 delivered to florida.

Thanks Andy. I'll take a look when I get home. Can you tell me the part number that you ordered and where you ordered it from? For $15 I'll order one and see if it works for the 1997.

Ebay item number 361457820302

I have not got mine yet and can't guarantee the fit but I'm 90% certain it should fit without trouble.

Use a shop vac to blow air from the deck side of the hose. On the water side stick a long screwdriver in to open up the valve. All the crap in there will shoot out all over your arm but at least you'll know it's clean. I also installed the new ball scupper but that still didn't work well. I just bought a screw in plug from McMaster and that's worked great for me.

Search Amazon for "Ball Scupper"... prices vary from $4 to 20ish... I used the TH Marine Flow Max on mine...
