1995 GTX - rubber boot on PTO - what does it do

I've replacing the thru hull fitting and the seal carrier assembly (with the seals and needle bearing) on my 1995 GTX. I've discovered that the rubber boot that is supposed to be up from the seal carrier is non-existent. From the looks of the parts and repair catalog diagrams, the fat end of the boot (part 272 000 001) clamps around the PTO flywheel. It looks like the smaller end clamps around the driveshaft? Is that right? I'm going to order a new one, but somewhat confused exactly what 2 areas in the driveshaft train it clamps to. Does the rubber boot rotate?

Yip.

PTO boot goes over it with a clamp and other end clamps to drive shaft.
Your supposed to geese fitting on PTO to keep splines greased.

Hope that helps.

Make sure your driveshaft has the rubber ends on each end. Very important!

Ah - thanks...makes sense. Looks like it does what the rubber boot does for CV joints in a car - helps keep contaminants out. The narrow part that clamps around the drive shaft is still present, but the fat end that clamps around the PTO is missing. Looks like it doesn't do anything as far as keeping water out. I'm just wondering what would be the worse thing that would happen if I re-attach just the narrow part around the drive shaft splines for the weekend and run it tomorrow until a new boot comes. I know, I hate doing anything half-butt....

I did replace the rubber bumper in the driveshaft!

Pretty much.

If yours is missing the other half of boot it will let water and contaminants in but you already cleaned them up and ready for reassembly.

Grease it good and go have fun. You'll have to remove everything to reinstall new boot.

Ride it like you stole it!
