i know its a 1990 sp and its not a superpowerhorse or anything but my buddy has a 93 gts which is a 3 seater with the same motor...ive rode his and when you press the throttle it digs really good and gets you on top of water and to max speed in a pretty quick time...

if i gas it it feels like it just wont dig and come out of the water but once it finally does it rides perfect for a 90 model

i was running a little heavy on the premix and ended up fouling my plugs by the end of the day but i dont think that wuld have that much difference.

what are some things that help it get some torque? would a new prop help?

again i do understand its a 1990

another quick question
i have a motor from a 95 hx its a 717 would that fit inside of the 90 hull?

thanks ahead!

If rpms are high on take off you have cavitation. you may have a bad wear ring or something else that will cause cavitation. I do believe the 717 engine will fit good you will have to use other parts off of the ski to make it work. If this ski is runing right it will put a big smile on any newbee's face even with a small engine.

Chances the premix might be a little rich. Are you using a 40:1 mix? Are you using the correct oil in the premix? here is the recommended oil to use.
Use High quality low ASH API TC Injector oil.
Do Not use NMMA TC-W, TC-W2 or TC-W3 outboard motor oils or other ash less type 2 cycle oil. Avoid mixing different brands of API TC oil as resulting chemical reaction will cause severe engine damage. Never mix Mineral or synthetics oil together.

Never use fuel containing more than 10 % alcohol,( Methanol or Ethanol) as severe damage will occur. The minimum of 87 octane is recommended for most engines.
Has the wear ring been replaced in a while? This could cause it to rev up and not be so fast on the top end.Here are the specs on the wear ring;

Wear Ring clearance for your seadoo is 1.0 mm or (.040in)
center of the impeller blades, with a 12” long guage. Measure the clearance from the venturi side of the jet pump.
Visually if it looks larger than 1/16" it might be time for a new wear ring. Also if it has large gouges or scraps it may be time also.

I hope this helps. Keep us posted if you have any other questions.

Hey jbm0121.....
Have you gone thru carb/s lately, maybe internal filter or diaphram can be clogged/damaged...also, if i'm not mistaken, i think you have to use premix oil and not injector oil, when premix'n the gas....but, the oil these days???

Engine replacement....

1990 SP used the yellow 587 engine. This electrical system ran on the simple electronic module. No mpem. The 95 HX motor may be (if I'm not mistaken) could have the mpem installed with the DESS security system. If this is the case, you'll not only be replacing the motor, but the entire electrical system.

This may be something to look into. I'm going to the manuals now to see.

UPDATE: No, the 95 717 does not use the mpem yet. So, you may find that you can swap motors, if everything lines up. Not many people do this. So, a complete electrical system may need to be done if you do. The magneto and electrical charging system could be different, so, to ensure a good change over, I'd use the wiring harness and set up off that motor.

thanks for the quick replies guys...

i will be taking it apart this week sometime i think to check the wear ring and clean the carbs..

where are the best places to order parts online?

i did notice a little exhaust inside the hull but not a whole lot...whats the best way to track down an exhaust leak? i assume hook to hose and run with seat on for a little while then take the seat off to see where its coming from?

from reading i have gathered that to change the wear ring i need: some type of impellor removing tool, some sea doo synthetic oil to refill, possibly new bearings while everything is out, and a shop manual would help alot may have to go premium!, am i missing anything?

again thanks

A new neoprene seal and read how not to pinch the thrust bearing when installing pump cover. From what I read most of the time the bearings are good in the pump unless it does not have oil in it. Hopefully your oil is not milky. while the impeller is off it may not be a bad time to replace seal under it. it cost about $15.00 but you will need a puller to remove seal. I bought one from harbor freight it is not of high quality. [$17.00] The seal puller part was so cheap it bent but it comes with long thin cast iron jaws that worked very well. exhaust leaks can rob engine of power. when I first got mine I was blowing off exhaust couplings and it would lose all engine power. good luck Robin

i finally got around to working on this thing....got the pump out and the pump oil i cant find any sea doo pump oil anywhere is there any thing else i can use in its place? will any 75w90 polyester oil work?

turns out i pretty much didnt even have a wear ring

i was also wondering, could i put some sponsons on this ski? to help plane it out and add a little stability?

There might be a after market company that might have something. I would Google it.
