Do you have to pull the entire engine on an 89 SP to get to the starter. I'm more of a car guy and this is my first delve into the PWC repair. I bought 2 seadoos and one I was told needs a starter. Any shortcuts or pitfalls to avoid. Thanks for the help!!

Hey Thomh....
Take the plugs out, then remove the grey shield on back of motor, that will expose the pto, turn that counterclockwise, should spin freely, if so, then mount the plug boots on grounding post (top of mag cover), still w/ plugs out, then crank, nuth'n, try hook'n cables to starter (underneath exhaust), if she kick, like try'n to fire, then solenoid bad, BTW, dont hook w/ running car.
Check battery for good readings, if so, you can jump the solenoid, w/ scredriver/thick gage wire, then see.
Starter can be accesed with'n the boat....

Welcome to the seadoo forum Thom. What seems to be he problem with the starter that you need to pull it out? Some times it just needs to have the ground cleaned up to have a better connection to get it to turn over. Check the ground going to the engine near the starter. Let me know it this helps or if you have any other questions.

Removal....

In your post, your requesting the removal procedure.

Disconnect the battery. You have one bolt bracket on the back of the starter and 2 bolts up front. About the same configuration of an old Chevy starter. When you pull it out, it'll even look like one.

Working on a ski with hardly no room, I have to use a mirror (and flashlight) to give me visual access to what it is I'm working on.

SBT sells a high torque starter replacement for a little over $100 bucks. But you may be able to take that to your local alternator/starter repair shop and just get it re-wound and new brushes put in.

I just bought the jetski and the previous owner told me that it had a bad starter. Worked on it for a little while tonight and found that the starter gear was jammed in the torque converter. I loosened the starter bolds, backed pressure off the setup, and voila all was better. Too bad I had taken the exhaust manifold and motor mounts off before I figured this out. Still trying to figure out the need for the switch on the right console is for.I think it's the kill switch, but I'm trying to download the manuals now. Thanks for the help!!!

Kill switch....

Yeah, it's the kill switch. Just FYI, a torque converter is on an automatic transmission and is bolted to the flywheel, which the starter engages to start the motor. The starter on a pwc is geared to the magneto flywheel. There is no torque converter.

Good luck.......need more help, just holler!................
